Job summary

Rochester Regional Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician to provide direct and indirect patient care on the Med Surg- 3rd Floor unit (UMMC). The role supports treatment plans set by licensed nurses, assists with unit operations, and communicates effectively with patients and families.

The position is part-time, 12-hour shifts, totaling 24 hours per week. Lifting, mobility assistance, and clerical duties may be required in a busy clinical setting.

Qualifications

• Minimum age requirement: 18.
• Nursing Fundamentals or CNA certification preferred; healthcare facility experience or PCT training considered.
• Associates degree preferred.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care & indirect activities to facilitate unit functioning.
• Participates as a member of the care delivery team.
• Provide safe and competent care for patients including hygiene, nutrition, skin integrity, and comfort.
• Take patient vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure and pain level.
• Demonstrate excellent communication and empathetic support to patients and families.
• Demonstrate teamwork with care delivery team members.
• Assist with ambulation, feeding, transferring or lifting of patients.
• Assist with admission, discharge and transfer of patients.
• May perform clerical duties including transcription and maintenance of patient charts.
• Assist patient mobility (sitting, standing, walking).
• Cath lab duties may include stocking rooms and handling meds on OR field.

SUMMARY:

Provides direct or indirect patient care in accordance with treatment plans as determined/delegated by a licensed nurse or RN. Assists with tasks necessary for the general management and organization of the patient care unit, being flexible meeting patient and/or unit needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide direct patient care & indirect activities to facilitate unit functioning.
• Participates as a member of the care delivery team.
• Provide safe and competent care for patients with relationship to nutritional, skin integrity, elimination & hygiene needs including bathing, grooming and changing bed linens.
• Take patient vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure and pain level.
• Demonstrate excellent communication skills, compassion and any other kind of support needed for the patient and patient family members.
• Demonstrates exceptional communication with the members of the care delivery team modeling teamwork for other team members.
• Assist with ambulation, feeding, transferring or lifting of patients.
• Assist with the admission, discharge and transfer of patients.
• May also perform clerical duties including transcription & maintenance of patient charts.
• Assists patient with mobility, such as sitting, standing, and walking.
• (Cath lab only) - Stocks rooms, may handle meds, sharps and syringes on the OR field.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum age requirement: 18

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of one of the following: Nursing Fundamentals, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, experience as a medical assistant/technician in a health related facility or participation in a Patient Care Technician training program.
• Associates degree

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Moderate - Clinical - Moderate clinical roles are patient facing roles that require continual movement, including standing, walking, and lifting 20–50 lbs., along with pushing and pulling medical equipment and assisting with patient positioning. Employees perform frequent bending, twisting, and reaching while completing fine motor tasks in busy or confined clinical environments. High sensory acuity is essential for monitoring patient status and responding to alarms or safety concerns. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements.
