Job summary

Regional One Health in Memphis, TN seeks a dedicated patient care technician to support 5C2 Med Surg. You will perform EKGs, phlebotomy, daily patient care tasks, and clerical duties while maintaining patient records and adherence to HIPAA.

You will collaborate with nursing staff to implement care plans, monitor patient responses, and ensure safety and comfort. CPR/BLS certification is required, with day shift duties in a patient-centered hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an approved medical assistant program.
  • CPR/BLS certification.
  • Ability to work with neonatal, pediatric and geriatric patients as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care by performing assigned tasks for patient care plan implementation, taking and recording vital signs, and documenting outcomes.

A Brief Overview

Assists staff by performing patient care activities, EKG, phlebotomy, clerical and other activities required to meet the needs of patients and in compliance with established policies and procedures. Assists with special procedures and examinations.

What you will do
  • Provides patient care by performing assigned tasks for patient care plan implementation: contributing information in day-to-day management, carrying out routine nursing care measures as delegated, completing tasks evidenced by outcomes and documentation, taking and recording vital signs, preparing and forwarding specimens, delivering activities of daily living, maintaining records of fluid intake and output, providing measures of comfort and convenience, observing and reporting patient response to interventions, completing documentation requirements, providing one-on-one for patients requiring close observation and monitoring, obtaining medical and lab records, communicating unit activities, following up with patients, performing other procedures specific to clinical area, and demonstrating knowledge and skills to meet age-specific patient needs in a caring manner.
  • Performs diagnostic EKGs as required:
    • Informs and explains EKG test purposes and procedures to the patient prior to commencement of testing.
    • Determines proper placement and attaches electrodes to specified areas of patient’s body using EKG equipment.
    • Administers EKG exam, observes patient, EKG tracings and equipment, recognizing and reporting abnormal reactions, events or technically inadequate results.
    • Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures, including ordering, charging, and computer entry.
  • Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy functions efficiently with a minimum of discomfort to patient:
    • Performs venipuncture and skin puncture using appropriate procedure, technique and materials for each test ordered.
    • Obtains blood/specimen and performs various screening tests as ordered for diagnostic testing.
    • Collects venous, capillary and micro specimens from patients.
    • Calms and reassures patients or significant others who are anxious about having blood specimen withdrawn, explaining why specimen is needed to elicit cooperation.
    • Prepares and transports specimens and test requests to appropriate laboratories.
  • Interacts and communicates in a customer-responsive and courteous manner in compliance with iRESPECT standards, promoting patient/customer satisfaction and collaborating with medical/hospital staff.
  • Performs clerical duties such as answering telephone, responding to call signal, filing/assembling charts, completing tab sets, transcribing orders and scheduling tests.
  • Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes; maintains patient medical records, performs charting duties, records activities and observations, and utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
  • Lifts, positions and transports patients utilizing proper technique and equipment, accompanies and remains with patient during clinical tests or procedures in other departments, and transports charts, specimens, equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information while adhering to established department and organization policies (HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department-specific requirements, attends staff meetings, all mandatory in-service and additional continuing education as required, responds to problems/opportunities to improve care, and participates in the organization’s performance improvement initiatives.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner: cleans, restocks and prepares patient care and supply areas, reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel, and adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement with consideration given to risk management, infection control and patient safety practices.
  • Collaborates with forensic team and law enforcement officials as it relates to the care of inmates and arrestees to maintain a safe and secure environment at all times.
  • Provides coverage for relief and absences as required.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an approved medical assistant program.
  • Completion of a nursing assistant program with documentation of training in EKG and Phlebotomy in lieu of medical assistant training.
  • Completion of the course requirements for graduation from a Registered Nursing program, after unsuccessful 2nd attempt of the NCLEX exam.
  • Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonatal, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient as specialty assignment dictates.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
