Job Summary:

We are hiring for a full-time Patient Billing Specialist. We areseeking professionals with demonstrated patient relations andcustomer service experience interested in working in an academic,dental medicine environment. The Patient Accounting Department, a unit of the Office ofFinancial Affairs, is responsible for managing and monitoring allaspects of patient accounting and interactions with dentalinsurance companies, Medicaid, and collection agencies. Under thedirection of the Patient Accounting Supervisor, the Patient BillingSpecialist's primary responsibilities include performing accountingservices (i.e., payments, billing, accounts receivable, collectionmanagement, patient registration, Medicaid billing &third-party insurance billing), and educating students, faculty,and staff on SDM patient financial policies and procedures.

The position is located at the University of Colorado - AnschutzMedical Campus. Hours will be dependent on business need (i.e.,career fairs, employee consultations, professional development) buttypically will be Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:00am and5:00 pm. This is a patient facing position and is 100% onsite. Theprimary work location for this position is the Department ofOrthodontics patient billing window, but this role may provideback-up coverage for any of the patient billing windows asneeded.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Receive and greet patients, offer information concerning clinicpractice policies, financial procedures, and operations.
  • Advise and communicate with patients, students, faculty, andstaff concerning SDM financial policies and procedures (i.e.,patient financial responsibilities, dental insurancepre-authorizations, and policies) and resolves patient financialaccount issues.
  • Process and appropriately document various payments (i.e.,cash, checks, and credit card) from patients and insurancecompanies, and other entities (e.g., Department of Health Care& Human Services)
  • Perform maintenance in the electronic health record system toensure accurate billing and reporting.
  • Reconciles and verifies transactions (i.e., cash, check andcredit card) against reports clinic computer system and credit cardtransaction terminals.
  • Assists in the daily preparation of clinical activity depositsto include log sheet, UCD campus cash receipt, the bank depositreceipt and armored car deposit pick up log.
  • Responsible for making sure that the proper paperwork isretained in the payment office and sent to the Bursar'sOffice.
  • Responsible for verifying Medicaid eligibility In a timelymanner and communicating to necessary parties results that requireaction; Responsible for maintaining the files for all Medicaidpaperwork and any Medicaid correspondence in the patient accountingoffice.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of technical accounting, bookkeeping, medicalbilling, or related experience
    • Substitution : Appropriate education will substitute forthe required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time ofhire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in handling cash in a professionalenvironment.
  • Demonstrated experience with insurance, Medicaid, anddental/medical insurance terminology, principals, andprocesses.
  • Previous experience working in a dental and/or academic medicalenvironment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the UnitedStates without requiring sponsorship. We are unable to provide workvisa sponsorship or employment authorization for this position nowor in the future.
  • Report promptly Monday through Friday, from 8am-5pm to ensureadequate coverage of the booth.
  • The primary work location for this position is in theDepartment of Orthodontics patient billing window, but theindividual in this role will also need to be willing and able towork at any of the patient billing windows as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate a broad range oflaws, rules, and regulations in order to exercise good judgment inapplication.
  • Ability to manage patient and financial accounting informationsystems, processes, and policies.
  • Ability to analyze financial and accounting information toidentify as well as correct variances.
  • Knowledge of the professional standards, concepts, andpractices of insurance, Medicaid, and dental/medical insuranceterminology, principals, and processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing andorally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships with employees at all levels throughout theinstitution.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality whileworking with sensitive information.
  • Ability to take initiative with daily work activities andcollaborates to create a positive effect on team performance.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $44,376 – $57,696. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range ofpossible compensation at the time of posting. This position may beeligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
