Job summary

Huron-Regional-Medical-Center in South Dakota seeks a Patient Accounts Representative to assist patients with financial aspects of care, including insurance coverage, payment options, and billing processes, ensuring access to needed services.

You will counsel patients and guarantors, educate on benefits, and guide them through charity care and payment plan options while maintaining HIPAA confidentiality and high-quality customer service.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • One to two years of college or business school preferred.
  • One to two years of related experience or training preferred.
  • Computer and customer service skills required.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

Responsibilities

  • Conducts patient financial interviews to assist with the resolution of the patient’s account.
  • Advises and counsels patient and guarantors on rights, responsibilities, and procedures with regards to payment for care.
  • Counsels patients on insurance benefits and eligibility.
  • Assists patients with financial assistance applications and charity processing as needed.
  • Assists patient with navigation of the healthcare exchange and Medicaid referrals.
  • Maintains confidentiality per HIPAA and hospital policy; adheres to all compliance regulations.
  • Follows up on unpaid accounts to set up payment plans.

Reports To: Patient Financial Services Director

Status: 80 hours every two weeks

Shift: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Job Schedule: Full time

Weekly Hours: 40 hours per week

Position Purpose:

The Patient Accounts Representative assists patients and their families in understanding and managing the financial aspects of healthcare services. This role provides guidance on insurance coverage, payment options, financial assistance programs, and billing processes to ensure patients can access care while meeting financial obligations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts patient financial interviews to assist with the resolution of the patient’s account and to ensure compliance with hospital financial resolution policies.
  • Advises and counsels patient and guarantors as to the rights, responsibilities, and procedures with regards to payment for care.
  • Responsible for counseling and education to the patient and/or guarantor on their insurance benefits is applicable.
  • Works with patient to identify the most appropriate account resolution.
  • Assists patients with financial assistance application as needed and complete the charity processing for assigned patients, as appropriate
  • Assists patient with the navigation of the healthcare exchange
  • Assists patient with the Medicaid eligibility referrals in a timely and complete manner.
  • Assists patients with determining financial needs and setting up appropriate payment plans according to the hospitals billing and payment guidelines
  • Recognizes patients in needs of financial assistance and provides charity care applications or referrals to the Department of Social Services or the County Welfare Office.
  • Assist in processing charity care applications in a timely and complete manner
  • Visit all inpatients to explain billing process, Verify demographic and insurance information.
  • Ensure and adheres to strict confidentiality when handling patient information according to HIPAA privacy act and hospital policy and procedure regarding confidentiality.
  • Has knowledge of and adheres to all compliance regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service to all patients, guarantors and coworkers
  • Follows up on all unpaid accounts which includes contact with patient to obtain all necessary information and to assist with setting up payment plans.

Other Job Duties:

  • Participates in department and hospital wide performance improvement projects
  • Consistently and regularly attends scheduled departmental meetings staff meetings (75% attendance required)
  • Completes annually Health Stream training
  • Adhere to HRMC Dress Code policy.
  • Observes work hours and time clock regulations. Attends in-service on a voluntary basis for professional development needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Visual, auditory and speech acuity requisite to verbal and written communication with patients, staff, families, and other persons with whom contact is part of the work activities.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

  • Work in a quiet, clean, well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.
  • Finger/hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination along with better than average ability with numbers.
  • Sitting, standing, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching and some moving about within the department and the hospital.
  • Minimal lifting (10-15 pounds)
  • Work may be repetitious, and interruptions are frequent.
