Job summary

Boston Medical Center in Boston, MA seeks an ED Registration Clerk to ensure complete and accurate patient registration and billing information in a high‑volume emergency department. You will verify demographics, insurance data and collect copays while supporting ED staff in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; CAC certification within 120 days of employment.
  • 0–2 years hospital registration experience or 3+ years in customer service preferred.
  • Bilingual candidates and hospital/healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Ensure integrity of patient demographic, insurance and admission data in the hospital information system.
  • Verify patient insurance using various methods and apply payer requirements for reimbursement.
  • Assist with departmental coverage, including admission and ED coverage, and participate in holiday rotation.
  • Conduct inpatient interviews, secure patient valuables, and document accurate information on all accounts.
  • Handle difficult situations with effective problem-solving skills.
  • Serve as a resource for patients and staff regarding registration, insurance eligibility and admission questions.
  • Collect insurance copays and collaborate to provide a positive patient experience.
  • Work independently and in a team in a fast-paced environment with interruptions.
  • Type at least 40 words per minute and communicate professionally.
  • Use supervisors or managers to resolve issues and attend departmental meetings.
  • Respect cultural diversity and use interpreters when needed.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Job description

Position Summary

Ensures that the Emergency Department patient registration and billing information is complete and accurate. Provides support as needed to all ED staff. Must be able to function in both central and pod/treatment area environments. Performs full registration and obtains, verifies and records personal, demographic, financial and visit‑specific clinical information. Prioritizes and multi‑tasks in a hectic and fast‑paced clinical environment. All team members within Patient Access Services are expected to maintain a Quality Assurance score of 95% or greater.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; must complete CAC certification within 120 days of employment.
  • 0–2 years hospital registration experience or a minimum of three years customer service experience.
  • Bilingual persons and those with hospital or healthcare experience preferred.
  • Strong judgment, ability to prioritize and multitask, and excellent organizational and follow‑through skills.
  • Basic computer literacy, including MS Outlook and Epic; proficiency in using Epic and external database systems for case research.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Flexibility, composure under stress, and a strong work ethic with a focus on performance goals.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, maturity, and confidence in a diverse, multicultural environment.
Special Working Conditions

The Emergency Department is a Level1 Trauma Center serving more than 130,000 patients each year. The environment is fast‑paced, highly stressful, and can often be chaotic, requiring constant awareness and responsiveness.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly rate: $20.23–$24.65, based on qualifications. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, flexible spending accounts, 403(b) savings match, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family wellbeing.
