Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines is seeking a Pathology Technician - Histology to perform high complexity tissue grossing in the surgical pathology area and assist with autopsies. Under the direction of a pathologist, you will prepare and fix specimens and handle frozen sections as needed.

Register patients in Atlas and accessions cases in Cerner, monitor for discrepancies, and assist with morgue maintenance. This role supports LEAN principles and requires a science background and good communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in science or equivalent with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology or science courses.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word/Excel; strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to perform high complexity tissue grossing and assist with autopsies.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross description and dissection of surgical specimens; prepare/fix specimens.
• Process cytology specimens under supervision of cytotechnologists.
• Maintain morgue and assist with autopsies and frozen sections.
• Register patients in Atlas and accessions in Cerner; log and resolve data discrepancies.
• Train new employees and maintain supply inventories.
• Support LEAN principles and standard work in daily tasks.

As a Pathology Technician at MercyOne, you will perform high complexity tissue grossing in the surgical pathology area and assists with autopsies. Under the direction of a pathologist or pathologist’s assistant, performs gross description and specimen dissection of simple surgical specimens and prepares/fixes semi-complex surgical specimens. Processes cytology specimens under supervision of cytotechnologists. Performs instrument maintenance according to established protocols. Assists pathologist and pathologist’s assistants in performance of autopsies, and frozen sections. Responsible for the maintenance and functionality of the morgue. Registers patients in Atlas system and accessions cases in Cerner. Identifies and logs specimens with incorrect, discrepant, or missing information, and resolves in partnership with the resolution department. Monitor pending logs and resolve outstanding orders in a timely manner. Discards surgical tissue according to policy. Files slides and blocks. Assists with training new employees. Maintains supply inventories. Supports and utilizes LEAN principles and standard work.

Schedule:

M-F 1230p-9p no weekends or holidays

General Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in a science-related field OR education equivalent that includes the following: 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word/Excel. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills required. Good hand-eye coordination. Working knowledge of basic medical terminology.
