Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health seeks a Laboratory leader to oversee a full range of tests and ensure accuracy across complex workflows. The role directs daily operations, staffing, and collaboration with pathologists and clinicians in a busy hospital laboratory.

Qualified candidates have ASCP certification, a Bachelor’s degree in MLS/MT or Biological Science, and 3–5 years of experience with strong computer skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science / Medical Technology or Biological Science required.
• ASCP certified generalist or categorical Technologist or equivalent accreditation required.
• 3 years full-time experience required for exceptional internal candidates; 5+ years for external applicants.
• Demonstrates autonomy and capacity to lead multiple projects.
• Experience with computers and Microsoft Excel required.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a resource for assigned areas of expertise and provides technical support to staff.
• Oversees periodic review of quality control and instrumentation logs to ensure accuracy of test results.
• Demonstrates excellent skills at managing and directing workflow.
• Trains Medical Lab Scientists and Medical Lab Technicians. Participates in the development of training and competency procedures.
• Serves as liaisons between Lab Support Services and technical departments and provides timely communications and resolution of problems to clients outside the labs.
• Provides leadership in the absence of Clinical Managers. Represents the lab on committees. Provides input to managers for performance evaluations. Addresses personnel issues with the Clinical Manager.

Job Summary: Performs and oversees a full range of laboratory tests which range from moderately simple to highly complex testing according to Standard Operating Procedures. Confirms accuracy of tests results and reports laboratory findings to the Pathologists and other Clinicians.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

• Serves as a resource for assigned areas of expertise and provides technical support to staff. Assists in researching new tests, performs instrument evaluations, writes standard operating procedures, and maintains supplies for their areas of expertise. Resolves technical problems and troubleshoots when test systems are not within established levels of performance.
• Oversees periodic review of quality control and instrumentation logs to ensure accuracy of test results. Provides input into technical decisions, acts as expert for data collection and gathers monthly QC statistics. Functions as the technical on-call person for the off-shifts.
• Demonstrates excellent skills at managing and directing workflow. Monitors the daily operations and delegation of duties within the lab. Reallocates resources as needed.
• Trains Medical Lab Scientists and Medical Lab Technicians. Participates in the development of training and competency procedures. Instructs of residents and fellows.
• Serves as liaisons between Lab Support Services and technical departments and provides timely communications and resolution of problems to clients outside the labs.
• Provides leadership in the absence of Clinical Managers. Represents the lab on committees. Provides input to managers for performance evaluations. Addresses personnel issues with the Clinical Manager.

Required Education : Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science / Medical Technology or Biological Science required.

Preferred Education: None.

Required Work Experience : 3 years full time experience required for exceptional internal candidates, 5 or more years’ experience highly preferred and required by external applicants.

License/Registration/Certification : ASCP certified generalist or categorical Technologist or equivalent accreditation required.

Other : Demonstrates autonomy, capability and capacity to lead multiple projects and assist with staffing needs under the direction of department leadership.

Experience and high proficiency with computers required. Web based application experience, Microsoft applications including excel experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Leadership experience.
• 3-5 years of Supervisory/Management experience.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

Pay Range:

$43.65 - $58.74

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geographyof work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
