Job summary

US Digestive Health seeks a Pathology Specimen Processor to accurately handle specimens, assist in training staff, and troubleshoot routine issues. You will maintain records, assign accession numbers, and prepare specimens for reference labs while ensuring patient identification and specimen integrity.

The role operates in a pathology laboratory environment, requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and offers consistent daytime hours with no weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Follows Anatomic Pathology and specimen processing policies and procedures.
  • Prioritizes incoming specimens and processes stats immediately.
  • Assigns accession numbers and processes specimens per protocol.
  • Generates labels and attaches to specimens.
  • Inputs data for workload and maintains records and logs.
  • Cleans equipment and maintains a neat work area.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.

Description

Summary/Objective

Under general supervision and according to specific and detailed procedures, The Pathology Specimen Processor accurately performs specific tasks in assigned areas to ensure accurate and efficient specimen handling. They are responsible for assisting in training staff, troubleshooting and resolving problems, as well as processing information by compiling, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, and/or verifying information with superb attention to detail. The Pathology Specimen Processor will interact with health care professionals and respond to routine inquiries, and inspect and maintain the work area, instruments, and supplies.

Essential Functions
  • Follows Anatomic Pathology and specimen processing policies and procedures.
  • Assists with problem solving and troubleshooting routine issues.
  • Complies with departmental safety policies and procedures, including the use of applicable personal protective equipment.
  • Prioritizes incoming specimens; ensures stats and other critical specimens are accurately and immediately processed.
  • Documents specimen problems.
  • Communicates with supervisor.
  • Sets up and maintains designated work areas and equipment.
  • Collaborate with staff and Pathologists for all Anatomic Pathology processes.
  • Ensures specimen integrity by verifying patient identification.
  • Assigns accession numbers to all specimens and process them according to protocol.
  • Generates labels and attaches to the correct specimen.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to reference labs according to pre-established requirements.
  • Maintains daily records, such as specimen logs/worksheets, send outs, and special procedure logs.
  • Inputs data for workload.
  • Accurately enters patient demographics data into the laboratory computer system;
  • Detects and corrects errors according to laboratory policies and quality standards.
  • Maintains a neat and clean work area;
  • Stocks area with supplies as necessary.
  • Cleans equipment and small instruments.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties such as answering the telephone, referencing inquiries from other departments, communicating with external staff or sources or relaying messages to the appropriate personnel.
  • Responsible for checking organizational communication daily (i.e. Outlook, laboratory software, posted notices, etc.)
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.

Supervisory Responsibility

This role does not have supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment

This position operates in a pathology laboratory environment.

Physical Demands
  • Full range of body motion. Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
  • Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time. Some bending, lifting, and stooping required
  • Normal color perception and corrected visual acuity
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, with an 8-hour shift Monday through Friday. No weekends are required.
