Job summary

Torrance Memorial is seeking a Pathologists' Assistant to support the Pathology department. In this role, you will perform gross description and dissection of surgical specimens while ensuring accurate processing and documentation. A Bachelor’s degree is required along with recent Pathology Assistant experience.

The position offers a competitive compensation of $91.38 per hour. Candidates must be eligible to obtain ASCP certification within six months of hire and exhibit excellent judgment in their work methods.

Overview

Under the direction and supervision of a Pathologist, the Pathologists' Assistant performs gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens.

Responsibilities

• Performs gross description and dissection of human surgical specimens.
• Obtains appropriate clinical histories for surgical specimens.
• Processes surgical specimens.
• Exhibits good judgment in selecting appropriate tissue sections for histologic processing.
• Prepares frozen sections for Pathologists to render a diagnosis.
• Assists in establishing new work methods and procedures.
• Assists in training and orienting new employees.
• Performs clerical and computer-related documentation accurately.
• Disposes chemical and laboratory waste according to established procedures.
• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, documents preventive maintenance, makes minor repairs and immediately contacts appropriate personnel for complex repairs.
• Follows up to ensure repairs are completed.
• Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratory or storage.
• Labels reagents and supplies with appropriate information.
• Receives, restocks, delivers supplies, and notifies appropriate personnel of potential or actual stock shortages while maintaining appropriate inventory.
• Maintains inventory of supplies.
• Demonstrates an active problem-solving attitude and positive approach to all aspects of the job.
• Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting unsafe conditions or practices.
• Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

Recent Pathology Assistant Experience: PA (ASCP) Board of Registry to be acquired within six months of hire.

Certification Requirements
