Job summary

Albany Medical Center is seeking a Pathologists' Assistant to join the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Capital Region's only academic medical center. You will work with subspecialty pathologists, residents, and histology staff in a busy academic environment with diverse case material.

The role emphasizes clinical autonomy, education, and collaboration, with responsibilities spanning grossing, intraoperative consultations, documentation, and process improvement.

Qualifications

• Master's degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program.
• ASCP certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA(ASCP)).
• Current New York State Pathologists' Assistant license (or eligibility to obtain New York State licensure).
• Strong knowledge of gross anatomy, surgical pathology, specimen handling, and laboratory safety.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a high-volume academic environment.
• Previous experience in an academic or high-volume surgical pathology practice preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination, description, dissection, and sampling of a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens, including routine biopsies, resections, and complex oncologic specimens.
• Evaluate and prepare tissue for intraoperative consultation and frozen section with pathologists.
• Photograph and document gross specimens and ensure accurate orientation, sampling, and submission.
• Serve as a resource for difficult specimens and promote high-quality grossing practices.
• Teach and mentor residents and learners in gross examination and surgical pathology techniques; opportunities for academic title via Albany Med's promotions.
• Collaborate with pathologists, residents, histology staff, OR personnel, and leadership to improve quality and workflow.
• Participate in quality improvement, procedure development, validation, education, and other departmental initiatives.
