Job Summary

Location: Nebraska Methodist Hospital – 8303 Dodge Street, Omaha, NE

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00‑5:30 pm; occasional Saturdays.

Provides anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a licensed, board-certified or board-eligible pathologist.

Responsibilities

Essential functions of a Pathologists' Assistant include:

  • Evaluate appropriateness and accurately perform grossing and dictation of patient specimens.
  • Utilize time efficiently to complete assignments and assist coworkers.
  • Complete and document quality control 100% of the time.
  • Complete frozen sectioning in a timely manner and avoid exhausting the block unless instructed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and document it 100% of the time.
  • Achieve section/organization quality goals.
  • Comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines 100% of the time.
  • Identify problems and initiate immediate follow‑up with the Section Leader or Medical Director(s) to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services using critical thinking and decisive judgment.
  • Accommodate patient and laboratory needs by responding professionally to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
  • Manage all tissue specimen releases to patients and corresponding documentation.
  • Manage all digital images and HIPAA storage.
  • Assist Pathologists with autopsy procedures.
  • Document orientation, training, and education to ensure employee competence and meet accreditation requirements using effective communication.
  • Ensure organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.
  • Confirm new procedures and major revisions are read and understood.
  • Assist in training new and existing staff, including review of orientation checklists and skill training checklists.
  • Support educational activities for clinical laboratory scientist students.
  • Participate in inspections, proficiency testing, quality assurance activities, and record maintenance.
  • Prepare and update section policies and procedures to fulfill accrediting agency requirements, including CAP and JCAHO.
  • Complete proficiency testing as assigned and submit by deadline.
  • Assist in completing CAP checklist responses for on‑site or self‑inspection as assigned.
  • Assist in review/revision of procedure manuals as assigned.
  • Assist the technical coordinator or section leader with problem resolution and follow‑up reports for proficiency tests.
  • Assist with quality control and quality assurance activities.
Schedule

Monday‑Friday, 9:00‑5:30 pm; occasional Saturdays.

Job Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor of Science degree with completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) approved educational program and board‑certified eligible required.
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree with American Society for Clinical Pathology PA (ASCP) registration required.
Experience
  • Minimum one year of experience preferred.
License/Certifications
  • Must attain and maintain American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board certification within one year of hire.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
  • Computer skills required.
