Job summary

Montefiore Medical Center in New York, NY, seeks a Pathologist Assistant to perform accessioning of surgical specimens, prepare tissue for histology, and assist in intraoperative consultations under Epic Beaker LIS. You will handle gross descriptions, tissue procurement for research, and support autopsy procedures, while ensuring quality control and adherence to approved protocols.

Qualifications

• Must hold State of New York License for Pathologist Assistant.
• Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
• Some knowledge in Histology and Immunopathology procedures preferred.
• Familiar with Surgical Cutting Room and Autopsy techniques.

Responsibilities

• Receiving specimens from operating room and/or endoscopy suite.
• Perform order entry and update in the LIS (Epic Beaker).
• Organize and prioritize daily activities.
• Handle small fragments of tissue samples.
• Gross examination and submit tissue sections for histologic diagnosis.
• Prepare and cut tissue samples for frozen sections at 5 μm.
• Stain routine Hematoxylin/Eosin.
• Perform routine quality control in the lab.
• Process requests from residents and Attending to complete work orders.
• Procure fresh tissue samples for research and specialized studies (Cytogenetics, flow cytometry, EM).
• Organize storage and retrieval of specimens until disposal.
• Dictate gross examination using voice recognition.
• Ensure proper rotation and retrieval of specimens in cutting room/storage.
• Assist in organ evisceration and brain removal in autopsy cases.
• Dispose of tissue and chemical waste properly.
• Train other staff on cutting room procedures when necessary.
