HNL Lab Medicine in Allentown, PA is seeking a pathologist's assistant/gross room assistant to perform gross dictation for non-complex surgical cases. Responsibilities include tissue preparation for microscopic examination and gross description of specimens, with accurate accessioning in the LIS.

The role requires the ability to work independently and follow directions from the Lead PA and Pathologist. Education includes an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory

Qualifications

  • Must have an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, or 60 semester hours with specific science/maths coursework and ABHES/NAACLA clinical training
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical material, and to respond to inquiries from regulators or customers
  • Math skills include probability, statistics, geometry, and ratios for practical use
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems and basic computer tools

Responsibilities

  • Assist in gross preparation of non-complex surgical examinations
  • Select and prepare tissue for microscopic examination for permanent sections
  • Perform gross description of non-complex surgical specimens
  • Ensure correct accessioning and numbering of specimens in the LIS
  • Support special projects designated by supervisors and lead pathologists

Job description

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 16:30-00:30 Performs gross dictation of non-complex surgical cases.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists in the gross preparation of non-complex surgical examinations which includes: Selects and prepare tissue for microscopic examination for permanent sections for light microscopy. Performs gross description of non-complex surgical specimens. Assures correct accessioning and numbering of surgical specimens utilizing pathology information system. Assists, initiates, implements and/or completes special projects as designated by the Lead PA, Pathology Manager or Pathologist. Ability to work independently with minimum direction.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

Minimum: An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Must understand basic medical terminology.

Math Ability: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills: Word processing, Spreadsheets, E-mail, Laboratory Information Systems
