Job summary

Jobtailor seeks an experienced patent attorney to lead drafting and prosecution of patent applications in chemical and biological sciences. You will collaborate with US and European patent teams, support IP due diligence in business development, and guide strategy from discovery to commercialization.

Ideal candidate has JD, USPTO registration, and 5+ years in pharma/biotech patent work. Travel and cross-functional teamwork are part of the role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological, pharmaceutical or chemical sciences.
  • Graduate of an accredited US law school.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • Bar membership in at least one state or DC.
  • Five or more years drafting and prosecuting pharmaceutical/biological patents.

Responsibilities

  • Work with R&D teams to identify inventions and patentable subject matter.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications for chemical/biological inventions.
  • Support IP due diligence and negotiations in collaborations and acquisitions.
  • Interact with internal functions across discovery, development, manufacturing, regulatory and legal.
  • Draft freedom-to-operate analyses and advise on IP strategy.

Job description

  • Work directly with internal R&D teams to identify inventions
  • Conduct patentability assessments
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications for novel chemical sciences inventions
  • Support programs from discovery through development and commercialization
  • Interact with discovery, development, manufacturing and supply, regulatory, business development, commercial, and legal functions
  • Devise patenting strategies through product development teams to build robust intellectual property portfolios
  • Draft and prosecute global patent applications related to products, product candidates, and platform technologies
  • Support oppositions and other proceedings with internal litigation colleagues
  • Collaborate with in-house US and European patent attorneys, paralegals, legal operations, support staff, and local agents
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate analyses for R&D activities
  • Support business development activities, including research collaborations and acquisitions, through IP due diligence, IP counseling, and related agreement drafting and negotiation
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required
  • Travel requirements: 10%
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in the biological, pharmaceutical or chemical sciences from an accredited institution
  • Graduate of an accredited US law school
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO
  • Member in good standing of a Bar of at least one state or the District of Columbia
  • Five (5) or more years of experience as an attorney in a law firm or corporate setting, drafting and prosecuting pharmaceutical or biological patent applications
  • Time accrued as a practicing patent agent may be considered
  • Strong technical background in chemical or biological sciences
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Advanced degree in the biological or chemical sciences preferred
  • Experience counseling clients on intellectual property issues preferred
  • Experience prioritizing work and leveraging resources to manage a significant workload preferred
  • Ability to build partnerships and work in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to communicate competently and confidently with R&D clients, business partners, and senior leaders
  • Ability to exercise judgment on routine and non-routine matters within areas of practice
  • Ability to be proactive and take initiative
  • US and Puerto Rico residents only
  • No visa sponsorship
