A respected Washington, D.C.-based law firm is seeking a detail-oriented and technically adept Patent Agent with a background in mechanical systems to support a dynamic Intellectual Property team. The position involves handling patent filings, developing strategies to secure intellectual assets, and collaborating with inventors working on groundbreaking technologies.
Prepare, submit, and prosecute patent applications involving mechanical and related technologies
Draft and file responses to official actions from domestic and international patent offices
Collaborate closely with inventors and stakeholders to evaluate patentability and align IP strategies with innovation goals
Support the ongoing development and management of patent portfolios for clients across multiple sectors
Implement systems and workflows to streamline the coordination of patent filings, deadlines, and communications
Conduct research and technical analysis to strengthen application content and legal positions
Contribute to the development of internal practices related to patent data tracking and client correspondence
At least 1 year of hands-on experience handling patent prosecution matters
Demonstrated ability to manage details and meet deadlines consistently
Strong written communication and analytical skills, particularly for technical concepts
Ability to collaborate professionally across teams and with clients at varying levels
Experience working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
Proficiency in patent drafting and prosecution procedures
Familiarity with lithium-ion battery technologies or mechanical design/manufacturing preferred
Organizational skills for coordinating multiple projects and meeting deadlines
Effective communicator with strong interpersonal abilities
Creative problem-solving capabilities and sound decision-making judgment
