Job summary

NinjaOne is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Java to design and implement scalable IT Operations features, advancing the platform and ensuring high-quality code for millions of endpoints. You will join a team of engineers delivering mission-critical services, influence architecture, mentor peers, and own initiatives, with a focus on data-volume datastore scale on the Patching team.

Location is US-flexible with remote options; hybrid offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, CE, IT, or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years of Java software development for product applications.
• 5+ years building highly scalable systems.
• Proven experience in scaling systems and complex design challenges.
• Strong OOP design principles and RESTful API design with Spring.
• Relational database design and development expertise.
• Experience with caching systems; data warehouse exposure a plus.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer, Java at NinjaOne, you’ll play a key role in enhancing our IT Operations product suite by designing and implementing scalable solutions and platform improvements. You’ll contribute to new features and support existing functionality, all while ensuring our software meets the high expectations of our customers.

In this role, you’ll be part of a team of engineers and technology experts, delivering mission‑critical services that help our customers manage, protect, and maintain millions of endpoints and servers. You will have the opportunity to design and develop high‑availability software systems that support our global operations.

Location

We are flexible on remote working from home if you are located in the U.S. and reside in one of the following states: CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IL, KS, ME, MA, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

Technical Focus

On our Patching team specifically, scale shows up primarily as a data‑volume problem — think retrofitting systems to handle massive datasets, not just high request traffic. If you’ve worked on large‑scale datastore performance, this is where that experience gets used daily.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead the development of large‑scale software applications, ensuring high quality and adherence to our quality‑first standards.
• Influence critical architectural decisions, ensuring that systems are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business objectives. Balance technical debt, performance concerns, and scalability with business needs.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to align on technical decisions and drive improvements. Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance on best practices and setting technical standards across projects.
• Take ownership of technical initiatives, proactively address challenges, and drive improvements based on data reported by support teams.
• Advocate for and implement quality assurance practices, ensuring the delivery of robust, high‑performance software.
• Contribute to additional responsibilities as needed to support the team’s success.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years of experience in Java software development, particularly for product applications.
• 5+ years of experience with highly scalable systems.
• Proven experience in scaling systems and solving complex system design challenges.
• Strong knowledge of object‑oriented programming (OOP) design principles and practices.
• Expertise in API design and RESTful services, with experience using frameworks like Spring.
• Proficient in relational database design and development.
• Experience with caching systems.
• Data warehouse exposure and testing/automation tooling a plus.

Due to operational policies, NinjaOne is unable to hire for this role within the city limits of Chicago. We will consider all qualified candidates who reside outside of the city proper or are willing to self‑relocate.

Starting pay depends on a variety of job‑related factors, including but not limited to location, market demands, experience, job‑related knowledge, and skills. For roles based in California, Colorado, New Jersey, or Washington the base salary hiring range for this position is $160,000 to $240,000 per year. For roles based in New York, the base salary hiring range is $160,000 to $240,000 per year.
