We are seeking a Part-Time Youth Services Library Page who is enthusiastic about public libraries, enjoys working with children and families, and is interested in supporting library services that connect people with learning, information, and community.

Definition: This entry-level position serves to provide library services for the general public and to perform administrative tasks of a physical, intellectual, and confidential nature in the Youth Services Department, all other work as required.

Supervision: Work under the general direction of the Youth Services Librarian and the policies established by the Board of Library Trustees. Questions, unusual situations, or concerns should be referred to the Youth Services Librarian and Assistant Youth Services Librarians. This position is subject to review and evaluation according to the Town’s personnel plan.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The Youth Services Library Page is responsible for assisting with various aspects of the Youth Services Department, including public service operations, collection management, library programs, and community outreach.

Other responsibilities:

  • Refer the general public to appropriate service desks or departments.
  • Assist with library technology and equipment (e.g., computers, printers, video game consoles, etc.).
  • Assist with reader’s advisory.
  • Assist with maintaining areas managed by the Youth Services Department.
  • Perform work under typical office and library conditions with varying levels of activity, noise, and interruptions.
  • Library hours may require scheduled evenings and weekend work.
  • Proficiently and effectively, operate and maintain library technology and equipment.
  • Experience regular contact with the general public and library staff.
  • Handle confidential patron information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Errors in work may affect library operations, patron service, public relations, or departmental efficiency.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required; progressive experience in a service-related field or volunteer work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

Knowledge: Basic understanding of the principles and practices of general library work, technology, and public service.

Ability: Exercise appropriate judgment and initiative to perform duties and support department operations. Learn the classification system and organization for circulating library materials and collections. Complete assignments independently and with accuracy. Adhere to library procedures and policies. Actively contribute to decision-making. Interact effectively, tactfully, and courteously to maintain favorable public and staff relations. Engage in professional development and keep current with library trends. Adapt to evolving technologies and services.

Skill: Strong customer service skills; community engagement and outreach; library technology and equipment usage; attention to detail; multi-tasking; organization; and effective oral and written communications. Bilingual proficiency in Portuguese or Spanish is a plus.

Physical Requirements

This position involves both physical and administrative work. Duties may require:

  • Standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Moving, carrying, and shelving library materials.
  • Using fine motor skills to operate computers and office equipment.
  • Lifting and moving items weighing up to 35 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Communicating effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Reading printed and digital materials and adjusting visual focus as needed.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and any required physical examination.
