Job Summary

Licensed veterinarian responsible for providing veterinary care for owned or sheltered animals. May be responsible for performing surgeries that include dentals, spay/neuter or other soft tissue surgeries.

Responsibilities
  • Performs all work in accordance with SPCA of Texas protocol.
  • Humanely treat and care for all animals entrusted to the SPCA of Texas.
  • Perform medical care to include, but not limited to, routine and sick examinations, preventative care, emergency triage and stabilization, heartworm treatment, dental procedures and soft tissue surgery.
  • Administer and accurately monitor controlled substances.
  • Maintain and complete patient records.
  • Provide hands‑on training, guidance, and mentorship to veterinary externs, fostering their clinical development and ensuring a supportive learning environment.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to both internal team members and external clients, consistently demonstrating kindness, compassion, and a commitment to positive communication.
  • Serve as mentor to technical support staff.
  • Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.
  • Must possess clear verbal and written communication skills to ensure accurate reporting of staff, animal health, or equipment concerns.
  • Perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care within the shelter while minimizing patient stress and discomfort.
  • Maintain medical standards of care as set forth by SPCA of Texas protocol.
  • Be able and willing to examine, diagnose, and treat disease and injuries of shelter animals that include, but not limited to, dogs, cats, livestock and exotics.
  • Serve as a resource for the development of protocols regarding sanitary measures, feeding, disease prevention and population management.
  • Understand and maintain confidentiality rules regarding all animals as set forth by SPCA of Texas protocol.
  • Understand and practice ‘herd health’ principles as well as individual animal care.
  • Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures.
Abilities Required
  • Static Strength: the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Judgment and Decision Making: the ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Monitoring: the ability to monitor and assess performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Emotional and Mental Requirements: the ability to work effectively under stressful conditions. Ability to rapidly and accurately process information.
  • Applicant must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent.
  • Licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Texas, including Texas Veterinary License and DEA license or the ability to obtain both before the start of employment.
  • Applicant must provide proof of and maintain personal liability insurance.
  • Strong proficiency in medical knowledge and surgical skills.
