Job summary

Lone Star College-CyFair in Cypress, TX seeks tutors to assist students and community members needing help in assigned disciplines and study skills. Primary duties include tutoring and creating a conducive learning environment.

You will maintain records, tailor tutoring to diverse learners, and coordinate with LSC staff to obtain syllabi and materials. Additional duties and timely documentation are part of the role.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Transcripts and/or a proficiency test may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers tutoring services to students at scheduled times (individual or group).
  • Assists students with development of study skills for post-secondary education.
  • Keeps regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions.
  • Monitors and reviews student work; adapts tutoring to learner needs.
  • Encourages students to take responsibility for their progress.
  • Obtains course syllabi/materials from staff/faculty and develops tutoring materials.
  • Provides feedback on student progress to staff/faculty.
  • Continues professional development through research and relevant materials.
  • May assist with other duties (e.g., covering the Courtesy Counter, answering phones).
  • Completes required documents accurately and on time.
  • Participates in departmental meetings.

Job Description
Purpose and Scope

Tutors and instructs students and community members who needlearning assistance in assigned discipline(s) and study skills.Primary responsibilities include providing tutoring and relatedservices, and providing and atmosphere that is conducive to andencourages learning. Responsible for the general areas of studentacademic support, institutional service, and professionaldevelopment.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Effectively delivers tutoring services to students at scheduledtimes (may be individual or group sessions). Posts and maintains aweekly schedule of available hours for student appointments
  2. Assists students with the development of study skills necessaryfor post-secondary education
  3. Keeps regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions
  4. Monitors and reviews student work. Modifies and personalizestutoring strategies to accommodate the different learning stylesand needs
  5. Facilitates the learning process by encouraging students totake responsibility for their progress
  6. Interacts with LSC staff and/or faculty to obtain any necessarycourse syllabi or materials, and to develop tutoring materials insupport of the course
  7. Delivers feedback as appropriate to staff and/or facultyregarding student progress
  8. Continues professional education through research and review ofrelevant material relating to the assigned subject matter
  9. May assist with additional duties as needed, for example,covering the Courtesy Counter, answering phones, organizingmaterials, checking out resources, and performing other duties asassigned
  10. Completes and submits required documents in an accurate andtimely manner
  11. Actively participates in departmental meetings as required
  12. Responsible for other reasonable related duties asassigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated proficiency in assigned discipline's subjectmatter
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral andwritten

  • Ability to work independently with little direct or continuoussupervision
Physical Abilities

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably todo the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending;carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; ordriving an automobile. No special physical demands are required toperform the work.

Work Schedule and Conditions
  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in aMicrosoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other generaloffice equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed tocarry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimalexposure to safety hazards

Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is $15.60 to $28.90 dependent upon education andCRLA certification levels.
