Job summary

The People’s Music School in Chicago is seeking a Teaching Artist for the Beginner String Ensemble, delivering group lessons to 2nd–12th graders and directing a 20–40 student ensemble.

The role emphasizes theory, individual and ensemble performance, improvisation, and composition, with a focus on mentorship and adaptable instruction in a part-time, in-person schedule at Back of the Yards location.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in music education or performance or equivalent experience.
• Strong musicianship with knowledge of music theory and performing ability.
• Experience teaching ensembles to children of varying ages.
• Willingness to adapt teaching practices and collaborate with TPMS staff.
• Excellent oral and written communication; ability to work with diverse groups.

Responsibilities

• Deliver group lessons and ensembles for 2nd–12th grade students.
• Provide instruction leading to excellence in student performance.
• Teach theory and assess theory exams and composition projects.
• Mentor students with consistency and compassion.
• Coordinate with Program Manager and families about progress.
• Integrate PD tools into classes.
