Job summary

CAMBA is seeking a part-time Saturday Night Lights (SNL) Coach in New York City to plan, coach, and supervise basketball and other activities for middle and high school students.

You will help maintain a safe, inclusive environment, manage sign-in/attendance, coordinate with the SNL Supervisor, and work with NYPD officers during program hours. The role requires strong communication and a passion for youth development.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with middle school and high school students.
  • Experience coaching, officiating, or facilitating basketball or other sports and recreational activities.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate sign-in, attendance, and participant records.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coach, and facilitate basketball clinics, skill drills, scrimmages, and other sports and recreational activities for middle school and high school participants during Saturday Night Lights program hours, typically Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants, staff, officers, and visitors in the gymnasium and program space.
  • Manage participant sign-up and registration, ensure all participants sign in and out, and maintain accurate attendance records for each program session.
  • Ensure all required participant documentation is complete and submitted to the SNL Supervisor.
  • Identify local and citywide tournaments, leagues, and special events, and coordinate participant registration and preparation in partnership with the SNL Supervisor.
  • Work closely with New York City Police Department officers who visit and participate during program hours, and support positive, respectful interaction between officers and participants.
  • Build positive relationships with participants, encourage consistent attendance, and support recruitment and retention of new participants from the surrounding community.
  • Model and teach good sportsmanship, teamwork, conflict resolution, and positive youth development principles.
  • Manage participant behavior, de-escalate conflicts, and enforce program rules and codes of conduct consistently and fairly.
  • Set up and break down the program space, equipment, and supplies before and after each session, and maintain equipment and uniforms in good condition.
  • Report all accidents, incidents, injuries, and safety concerns to the SNL Supervisor immediately and complete required incident documentation.

Saturday Night Lights (SNL)

is a public safety and youth engagement initiative launched through the District Attorney’s Office that provides free, high-quality sports and recreational programming for middle school and high school youth during peak weekend hours, typically Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Delivered in partnership with the New York City Police Department and community-based organizations, SNL uses basketball and other sports activities to give young people a safe, supervised, and positive place to be on Saturday nights, while building trust and positive relationships between youth, law enforcement, and community partners. CAMBA operates SNL programming at sites where it holds the SNL contract.


Position: SNL Coach

Reports To: Program Director

Location: Cornerstone Programs

What the SNL Coach Does:

  • Practice Universal Precautions/Standard Protocol & Procedures.

  • Comply with all Federal, State, City, and CAMBA security and privacy policies to protect the confidentiality of individual health information.

  • Ensure the safety and security of all participants by following program protocols and procedures, including supervision, accident and incident reporting.

  • Plan, coach, and facilitate basketball clinics, skill drills, scrimmages, and other sports and recreational activities for middle school and high school participants during Saturday Night Lights program hours, typically Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

  • Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants, staff, officers, and visitors in the gymnasium and program space.

  • Manage participant sign-up and registration, ensure all participants sign in and out, and maintain accurate attendance records for each program session.

  • Ensure all required participant documentation, including registration forms, consent forms, and emergency contact information, is complete and submitted to the SNL Supervisor.

  • Identify local and citywide tournaments, leagues, and special events, and coordinate participant registration and preparation in partnership with the SNL Supervisor.

  • Work collaboratively with New York City Police Department officers who visit and participate during program hours, and support positive, respectful interaction between officers and participants.

  • Build positive relationships with participants, encourage consistent attendance, and support the recruitment and retention of new participants from the surrounding community.

  • Model and teach good sportsmanship, teamwork, conflict resolution, and positive youth development principles.

  • Manage participant behavior, de-escalate conflicts, and enforce program rules and codes of conduct consistently and fairly.

  • Work closely with the SNL Supervisor on session planning, scheduling, participation goals, program logistics, and site coordination.

  • Support documentation of program activity, including attendance logs, photographs, and event records, for reporting to the SNL Supervisor and funder.

  • Participate in required staff meetings, orientations,trainings, and program events.

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with participants and follow all CAMBA, funder, and school- or facility-based policies, procedures, and safety protocols.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum EducationRequired:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience and Skills Required:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with middle school and high school students.

  • Experience coaching,officiating, orfacilitating basketball or other sports and recreational activities.

  • Experience working with youth in a group setting, with strong behavior management and conflict resolution skills.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to maintain accurate sign-in, attendance, and participant records.

  • Availability to work Saturday evenings, typically 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., throughout the program season.

Pre/Postemployment Requirements:

Successfully complete and maintain all required background checks and clearances throughout employment, as required by applicable federal, New York State, and New York City regulations and as outlined in the pre/post-employment requirements. Failure to maintain required clearances may result in removal from duties involving children and/or further employment action.


  • New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Sex Offender Registry (SOR) clearance

  • New York State Central Register (SCR) clearance for child abuse and maltreatment

  • New York State Staff Exclusion List (SEL) clearance

  • New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) clearance, as applicable

  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting, as required

  • DOE Personnel Eligibility Tracking System (PETS) clearance, as applicable

  • Submit medical tuberculosis (TB) test results as part of the onboarding process.

  • Completion of the required health and safetytrainingslisted below within the first week of employment:

  • Identifying and Responding to Anaphylaxis: Elijah’s Law (1.5 hours)

  • Mandated Reporter Training (2 hours)

  • Getting Ready to Work with Youth Training (30 min)

  • Must completea one-hour training, provided byDYCD,on the following topics:

o Mental health and mental illness


o Engagement and de-escalation strategies


o Referral and crisis management protocols


o Mental healthresources


Compensation:$28.60 hourly

When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate.This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.
