Job summary

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is seeking a Part-Time Security Officer to safeguard patrons, staff, and assets at the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center and related venues.

You will work flexible 4-hour shifts, monitor entrances, perform patrols, carry out emergency procedures, and maintain security logs while providing escort and incident reporting support during events. Eligible candidates will undergo background checks; prior public safety experience is preferred and a flexible

Position Summary

The Part‑Time Security Officer provides security services at the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center and associated facilities, ensuring the safety of staff, patrons, and assets.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain a high level of awareness during scheduled shifts.
  • Work a minimum 4‑hour shift with flexibility to choose a monthly schedule based on events.
  • Adhere to Safety and Security General Orders.
  • Secure exterior exits and service doors per the hall operating schedule; conduct patrols of facilities and grounds.
  • Assist in coordinating emergency medical and evacuation activities.
  • Interpret, analyze, and problem‑solve in stressful situations.
  • Maintain the daily security log (Desk Officer).
  • Distribute temporary access badges for entry to and around the Max (Desk Officer).
  • Complete and distribute incident reports involving personal safety and security of DSO employees, customers, patrons, and physical assets.
  • Enter found items into the Lost/Found Logbook and note when items are returned to owners (Desk Officer).
  • Maintain keys, locks, radios and other security equipment (Desk Officer).
  • Provide escort services for personal protection of DSO employees, visitors, customers and patrons between the Max, parking lots and related facilities.
  • Provide security for the loading of equipment at the Max.
  • Assist in the receipt and distribution of materials delivered to the Max by outside services.
  • Maintain service and use records for burglar and fire detection systems (Desk Officer).
  • Answer phone calls from staff or the general public that may come to or be transferred to the security desk (Desk Officer).
  • Assist maintenance staff in maintaining the general appearance of the Max and grounds, and removing snow and ice from sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways during inclement weather.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to act independently, take initiative, and meet changing priorities.
  • Successful experience working in and contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, particularly at the security desk.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to walk, run, and climb stairs.
  • Ability to work in varying climatic conditions.
Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum 6 months of prior public safety/security experience; additional onsite training will be provided.
  • Availability to work DSO events throughout the week, including Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday.
Additional Information
  • This is an hourly, non‑union position.
  • Successful candidates must be available to work a varying schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • All positions require a background check prior to employment; a criminal record does not automatically disqualify candidates.
Physical Requirements

The role often requires long periods of standing and walking, monitoring patron arrivals and departures, and working at the security desk. Duties may involve staring at video monitors and/or a computer screen.
