Job summary

The Township of Union Public Schools Transportation Department seeks dedicated, qualified School Bus Drivers for the 2026-2027 school year. This per diem position reports to the Transportation Manager and requires reliable, safety‑minded candidates who can follow routes and schedules.

Responsibilities include pre/post-trip inspections, student supervision, completing reports, and participating in required training such as CPR, EPI and First Aid.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Acceptable verbal and written communication skills.
• Must possess a NJ driver license with CDL Class B, air brake, P and S endorsements.
• Previous experience as a school bus driver.
• Possess an acceptable driving record in accordance with applicable State and District requirements.
• Ability to participate in all required school bus driver training and professional development, including CPR, EPI and First Aid training.
• Ability to perform assigned duties.
• Successfully pass a Physical Examination, Mantoux and Criminal History Review.
• Exhibit interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections prior to and at the conclusion of morning and afternoon routes, as well as field and sports trips, and report any mechanical or safety concerns.
• Operate any District vehicle for which the driver is properly licensed and qualified, as assigned.
• Follow assigned routes, stops and schedules.
• Maintain appropriate supervision of students while on the bus and follow all District transportation and student safety procedures.
• Maintain student discipline on the bus and complete disciplinary reports when necessary.
• Complete all required reports accurately and within the time frame requested by the Transportation Manager.
• Must be able to perform and demonstrate bus evacuation procedures.
• Secure special needs students using appropriate restraints and equipment, including wheelchair tie-downs, seat belts and car seats, to ensure student safety and well-being.
• Provide First Aid and/or CPR only as trained and required by the situation.
• Protect the confidentiality of student records and information.
• Submit to random drug and alcohol testing as required by law.
• Keep the bus clean and fueled.
• Report all accidents, injuries and safety concerns immediately to the Transportation Manager and complete all required reports.
• Cell phones, earbuds, headphones, Bluetooth devices and other hands-free communication or listening devices may not be used while operating a school bus. In an emergency, the bus must be safely stopped and secured before a cell phone or other communication device is used.

STARTING PAY RATE:

$34.50 per hour - Step 1 - Per UTTA contract
