City of Northglenn is seeking a part-time Property/Evidence Custodian to safeguard department property and evidence, including that seized for court use. The role involves storage, disposal, and coordination with court personnel and other city departments.
The position requires strong communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment, with up to 20 hours per week and occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
Property/Evidence Custodian ensures the credibility of the Department through property storage of all property and evidence, including that which is seized for use in criminal and civil cases, and returns property to the rightful owners. The Property/Evidence Custodian may respond to the request of several command or line personnel at the same time, thereby requiring flexibility and individual prioritization. Although final accountability rests with the Operations/Support Services Division Commander, day to day decision making, problem solving, and management of the Property Unit is the responsibility of the Criminalist. The person in this position works closely with personnel from District, County and Municipal Courts. The Property Custodian employs a working knowledge of criminal codes, statutes of limitation, and State appellate statutes in the maintenance and disposal of property. Interacts regularly with personnel of all ranks and positions, Municipal Court personnel, and representatives from other City Departments. Interacts frequently with District and County Court personnel, attorneys, victims of crime, officers from other Denver area police agencies and criminals. The Property/Evidence Custodian must be flexible, responsive, autonomous and possess and utilize strong communication skills.

Receives and maintains evidence and non-evidence booked by Department personnel, to be introduced in Court proceedings, to be returned to owners, victims or finders; or to be disposed of according to ordinance.
Testifies in Municipal, County and District Courts regarding the chain of custody of evidence.
May accompany commissioned officers or Criminalist under potentially dangerous conditions, and assists with evidence obtained during the serving of search warrants.
Transports narcotics and major crime case evidence to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Handles potentially hazardous materials and stores them properly to ensure employee safety.
Takes a broad, open, and non-judgmental approach when analyzing situations.
Acts as liaison between laboratories, the District Attorney's Office and other police personnel.
To facilitate subsequent use in Court, in lieu of actual property, photographs items of evidence for release to owners.
Communicates and cooperates with various Departments and divisions to achieve overall organizational objectives. Works with personnel at all levels of the Court system to obtain dispositions of criminal cases.
Initiates the disposal, by various means, of narcotics, guns, money and other items.
Handles items of property related to sensitive cases such as personnel or narcotics investigations.
Through command authorization, directs co-workers to comply with booking procedures.
Maintains computer and hard copy files on the status of all property.
Locates and notifies property owners of property to be released.
Participates in City and Department property audits.
Position may also conduct notification, scheduling and registration processes for sex offenders.

Some college credit and related experience would be helpful.
Must possess above average knowledge of the legal system and technical photography.
Able to display organizational skills and problem-solving abilities.
Must be capable of learning codes pertaining to property and evidence seizure, retention and disposition.
Able to utilize computer, typing and filing skills.
Must possess the ability to communicate with technicians, the public, co-workers and supervisors under potentially stressful conditions.
Ability to direct co-workers in responding to procedural problems.
Should have an understanding of storage and handling or various materials.
Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Colorado.
Must have a safe driving record as evidenced by no major traffic violations.
Must be computer literate with the ability to function in word processing and specialized programs.
Vision must be corrected to 20/40, no color blindness and must pass a Form Blindness Test. (Form Blindness Test -Visual ability to decipher shapes and forms.)
Exposure to laboratory chemicals and fumes.
Possible exposure to bio-hazards.
This is a non-exempt position. Performs work using recommended and required personal protective equipment (PPE) as described in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for each task. Attendance is an essential function of the job.
