Part‑time Project Architectural Historian (Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Baltimore, MD offices; additional Mid‑Atlantic and Central Appalachian locations considered). Works with the Heritage & Cultural Resources, Earth & Environment Team on federal, state, and commercial projects, leading field surveys, researching, writing technical reports, and evaluating historical significance.

Responsibilities

• Maintain quality control standards for accurate reporting, evaluation, and documentation.
• Assist with basic architectural history work: research, report writing, and documentation of historic above‑ground resources.
• Follow safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures during resource surveys.
• Apply National Park Service and Secretary of the Interior guidance to evaluate historic significance and determine effects of projects.
• Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP Code of Conduct.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

• BA in Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, History, or related field.
• 3 to 5 years of post‑education experience as an historian, architectural historian, or related role.
• Knowledge of Secretary of the Interior Standards (36 CFR 61) and National Register criteria.
• Strong organizational skills and proficiency with standard office computer applications.
• Experience with above‑ground historic architectural surveys, archival research, and preparation of resource descriptions, treatment plans, and significance assessments.
• Ability to synthesize field data, archival research, and published research to answer project questions.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree (MA/MHP) or graduate‑level certificate.
• 2 years of demonstrable experience in Cultural Resource Management.
• Experience performing surveys and reporting with State Historic Preservation Offices in Virginia, Maryland, and surrounding states.
• Experience with ESRI GIS software (Fieldmaps, ArcGIS Online).
• Specialty in American architecture, historic bridges, cultural landscapes, cemetery investigations, archival research, preservation planning, HABS/HAER/HALS recordation, National Register nominations, etc.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations, based on 24 hrs per week): $26 K – $44.5 K. Compensation will reflect education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location.
