Job Summary
This part‑time, temporary, non‑benefit based position involves assisting in the preparation of bakery products, maintaining quality and portion control, and ensuring sanitation and safety standards are upheld. Workers will receive general supervision from the Pastry Chef, Lead Baker, or Area Managers, and oversee part‑time bakers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Production
- Assists in all phases of bakery preparation for Pavilion Dining room, Campus Restaurants, special functions, and catering.
- Assists in producing all bakery items to the required quality and quantity.
- Reviews the menu with the supervisor and coordinates daily production; organizes work areas for efficient operation.
- Checks production sheets against inventory to ensure necessary items are on hand; informs the supervisor of shortages.
- Inspects work areas for problems or discrepancies and reports findings.
- Prepares products to specification and reviews recipes, noting any variances in yield, appearance, taste, or texture; informs supervisor of discrepancies.
- Follows sequential production time‑frames established by the supervisor for maximum quality control.
- Assists in proper storage, dating, rotation of product, and utilization of leftovers.
- Responsible for cleaning equipment and work area at the end of production.
- Attends weekly production meetings.
Personnel
- Sets a leadership example by willingness to work all job tasks.
- Operates kitchen equipment and trains others on its proper use.
- Ensures smooth workflow, communication, and a congenial, caring, supportive attitude.
- Assists in directing part‑time bakery staff.
- Provides consistent feedback to employees regarding performance.
Customer Satisfaction
- Maintains good customer relations through attitude, appearance, and attention to detail.
- Maintains high‑quality standards and conducts quality‑tests of finished products.
- Ensures all foods are attractively garnished and displayed.
- Serves customer/guest needs with business urgency.
- Reports customer feedback to the supervisor or area manager.
- Provides input on menu and special meals during weekly production meetings.
Safety and Sanitation
- Implements and maintains proper safety and sanitation standards.
- Uses proper food‑handling methods and techniques.
- Assists in shutdown/clean‑up operations.
- Operates equipment efficiently to conserve energy.
- Maintains excellent personal hygiene, including care of uniforms, shoes, and head covering.
- Sets a good example and does not participate in unsafe acts.
- Reports accidents or injuries immediately to the supervisor.
- Reports equipment maintenance problems.
- Follows all University and Dining Services policies and procedures.
Special Conditions of Employment
Effective June 1 2023, the University encourages campus members to stay up to date with influenza and COVID‑19 vaccination recommendations per CDC guidance. Must working varied hourly schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must have excellent personal hygiene. Must complete a 3‑hour sanitation class required by the San Diego Health Department and the University's Hazmat Communication Program.

Degree Verification Requirement
Persons offered employment will provide official education transcripts for degree verification.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalence.
- A minimum of 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Culinary school experience, especially baking.

- Works with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of proper cooking/baking times, temperatures, and procedures.
- Understanding of basic sanitation and safety requirements.
- Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to organize personnel, work, and materials for maximum productivity.
- Excellent skill with specific equipment and tools.
Compensation
$20.00 – $22.00 per hour. This range reflects what the University reasonably expects to pay for this position; actual compensation may vary.
Hours
20 hours per week.
