Job summary

The New York Historical is seeking part-time Educators to lead history programs for students in the museum galleries, including the DiMenna Children’s History Museum. The collections support programs spanning 400 years of New York and American history.

Under the supervision of the Manager of School Programs, Educators facilitate object-based, inquiry-driven tours and workshops, with availability 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on most school days. Onboarding is scheduled October 6–8, 10 AM–5 PM.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; preferred concentrations in History, American Studies, Education, or Art History.
  • Experience in a museum, educational setting, or youth program with classroom management.
  • Familiar with NYC public schools curricula (NYCDOE Scope and Sequence; Common Core).
  • Comfort with English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Teach inquiry‑based programming about important events and periods in New York and American history in galleries, exhibitions, and online platforms.
  • Learn programs by studying outlines and conducting research to ensure effective delivery.
  • Communicate with administrative staff to ensure programs are delivered on time.
  • Maintain accurate records of program delivery in calendars and the Education Division booking system.
  • Gather materials prior to teaching to conduct successful programs.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Education Division trainings to learn institutional pedagogy and content.
  • Complete paperwork including evaluations, planning sheets, and time‑sheets within deadlines.
  • Opportunity to lead parent involvement programs, family programs, events, or teacher workshops.
