Job summary

Lake Havasu City Municipal Court is seeking an Associate Magistrate to preside over misdemeanor and civil traffic cases, ensuring fair administration of justice under Arizona law and city ordinances. This is a part-time, non-exempt position with the City.

The ideal candidate holds a Juris Doctor and a bachelor’s degree, with strong legal research and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Relevant judicial or legal experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Criminal Justice, Law or related field plus a Juris Doctor (J.D.)
• Experience in law enforcement, practicing law, or judicial capacity preferred; equivalent education/experience considered
• Possession of a valid Driver's License is required

Responsibilities

• Preside over hearings including initial appearances, arraignments, pre-trial conferences, civil traffic hearings, probation violation hearings, restorations, sentencings, bench trials and protective order hearings
• Adjudicate misdemeanors, criminal traffic, civil traffic, and city code violations with independent judgments on pleas, motions, and sentencing
• Review and sign criminal complaints and search warrants; conduct legal research to prepare opinions and interpret laws
• Analyze evidence presented in court, apply laws and rules, issue court orders, and manage bond forfeiture and show-cause hearings
• Assist the City Judge in administering court policies and ensure compliance with Rules of Judicial Conduct and court rules
