The Department of Earth & Climate Sciences at Tufts University is seeking a part-time Lecturer to teach "Sedimentology/Stratigraphy" (ECS-0042) in Spring 2027. This course aims to help students develop an understanding of the processes responsible for the generation, transport, deposition and preservation of sediments across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Themes include the response of modern sedimentary systems to natural and anthropogenically induced disturbances and use of stratigraphic interpretations to provide insights on the evolution of Earth’s environments to their present‑day habitable state. Each week, the course involves two 75-minute lecture periods and a 3-hour lab in which students gain hands‑on experience through examination and interpretation of samples, datasets, and via field trips. Full course materials are available for the instructor to use, though there is also flexibility to modify content and materials based on the instructor’s interests. The course will enroll approximately 5-10 undergraduate students.
The course runs January 20th– May 3rd 2027, with an exam during the final exam period (May 7–14th). It is currently scheduled to meet on Tuesdays from 12:00–4:20 pm for a combined lecture/lab session, with the second lecture period on Thursdays from 12:00–1:15 pm, although there may be some scheduling flexibility based on candidate availability. In addition, the instructor is expected to hold one weekly session of office hours.
