Qualifications

  • Professional experience in live coding, creative coding, algorithmic composition, electronic music performance, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more live coding and creative coding environments.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary electronic music practices and digital performance systems.
  • Familiarity with live coding communities, festivals, performances, research, or publications.
  • Excellent communication and teaching skills, with the ability to guide students through both technical and artistic aspects of creative coding, algorithmic composition, and live performance.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in live coding and algorithmic performance.
  • Introduce students to coding environments used in contemporary creative practice, such as SuperCollider, TidalCycles, Sonic Pi, ChucK, Max/MSP, Processing, p5.js, Hydra, or related platforms.
  • Develop student understanding of programming concepts including sequencing, pattern generation, algorithmic composition, data structures, functions, control flow, and generative systems.
  • Contribute to curriculum with foundational examples and exercises.
  • Guide students in the creation of original live coding performances, compositions, and interactive media projects.
  • Demonstrate contemporary artistic and professional applications of creative coding across music, multimedia, performance, installation, and emerging technologies.
  • Provide constructive feedback, mentorship, and assessment of student work.
  • Participate in departmental activities and collaborate with faculty across electronic music, performance technology, sound design, and coding initiatives as appropriate.

Overview

The Electronic Production and Design Department at Berklee College of Music seeks a part-time faculty member to teach Live Coding and Algorithmic Performance. This course explores programming as a creative and performative practice, enabling students to generate, manipulate, and perform music, visuals, and interactive systems through code in real time. The successful candidate will be an active practitioner with expertise in live coding, creative coding, algorithmic composition, and digital performance. They should be comfortable teaching both technical concepts and artistic applications, helping students develop coding fluency while cultivating their creative voice. This is a part-time faculty position with the opportunity to teach throughout the academic year with a renewable contract, initial appointment beginning in September, 2026. Compensation is commensurate with professional experience.

  • Teach undergraduate courses in live coding and algorithmic performance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or equivalent professional achievement.
  • College-level teaching experience.
  • Experience integrating audio, visual, and interactive media through code.
  • Active participation in live coding communities, festivals, performances, research, or publications.
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches involving AI, generative systems, digital instruments, creative technology, or immersive media.

The Electronic Production and Design Department prepares students for careers at the intersection of music, technology, performance, and innovation. Students engage with contemporary practices including electronic music production, sound design, digital instrument performance, coding, immersive audio, game audio, interactive media, and emerging creative technologies.

Hiring Range and Benefits

Hiring Range: Part-time Faculty as of 9/1/26: $66.96-$138 per hour. Salaries for faculty positions vary by academic rank; Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. Candidates are placed into a rank following the final completion of the interview process, based on qualifications, experience, and alignment with institutional needs.
