Join Our Team

Portland Community College (PCC) invites qualified candidates to consider part‑time faculty assignments in Native American Studies. PCC limits employment to individuals residing in Oregon or Washington; applicants must be able to establish residence in one of those states.

Part‑Time Faculty Interest Pool – Native American Studies

This interest pool is not a specific open position. The department will review the pool and identify applicants based on course‑assignment needs during the academic year, including substitute assignments and full‑term class assignments.

Instructor Qualifications

• Academic Credentials: Must hold one of the following degrees:
  • A master’s or doctorate in interdisciplinary Native American Studies
  • A master’s or doctorate in interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies with an emphasis on Native American Studies
  • A JD with an emphasis in American Indian Law
  • A master’s or doctorate in a traditional discipline (Art, Music, Literature, Linguistics, Social Work, Public Health, Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, History, Political Science, Sociology, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Anthropology, etc.) plus a clear record of academic coursework, teaching, and/or publication in Native American Studies. Examples include: instructor of record for two or more college‑level courses in NAS or equivalent; primary author of two or more publications on Native/Indigenous studies; creator of published works of Indigenous arts; at least two years of formal study of an Indigenous language with a representative of a Native nation; or at least 16 quarter credits (or equivalent upper‑division graduate coursework) in NAS or equivalent.

  “Academic Credentials” can be subject to the Demonstrated Competency process; “Cultural Relations and Engagement” cannot be subject to the Demonstrated Competency process.

• Cultural Relations and Engagement: Must have a documented connection to and an ongoing commitment to working with Native American/Indigenous communities. Evidence should include a letter from a representative of a Native community, such as a Native nation or government, an urban Native organization, or an academic Native community.

Benefits & Compensation

Part‑time faculty may be eligible for certain benefits including Oregon Sick Leave and retirement savings plans. Compensation generally begins at Step 1 of the current salary schedule; hourly rates are determined by the type of course taught (Lecture, Lab, or Lecture/Lab).
