Primary Function:

The EVS Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout Mason District Hospital, clinics, and assigned outbuildings. The position performs cleaning, disinfection, waste handling, and environmental services duties in accordance with hospital policies, infection prevention standards, manufacturer instructions, and established EVS procedures. The EVS Technician supports patient safety, timely room turnover, and continuity of hospital operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and punctuality. Report to work as scheduled, arrive prepared to begin work at the designated start time, and remain available to perform assigned duties throughout the scheduled shift. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position due to the position's impact on infection prevention, patient room turnover, and continuity of hospital operations.
  • Clean and disinfect patient care areas, hospital departments, clinics, offices, public areas, and assigned outbuildings in accordance with established EVS procedures and infection prevention standards.
  • Complete assigned cleaning schedules, work areas, patient room turnovers, and other assigned duties accurately, thoroughly, and within established timeframes.
  • Respond promptly to changing operational priorities and urgent environmental services needs, including spills, bodily fluid cleanup, isolation cleaning, discharge room turnovers, and other requests for cleaning or disinfection.
  • Follow infection prevention practices, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), isolation precautions, hand hygiene, and procedures designed to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Collect, handle, transport, and dispose of general waste and biohazardous waste in accordance with hospital policy and applicable safety requirements.
  • Use hospital-approved chemicals and cleaning products in accordance with manufacturer instructions, product labeling, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and hospital procedures. Do not mix chemicals unless specifically authorized by manufacturer instructions and hospital procedure .
  • Safely operate EVS equipment and tools, including carts, vacuums, floor care equipment, and other assigned equipment, following training and established procedures.
  • Maintain EVS equipment, carts, supplies, and assigned work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Promptly report damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Perform specialty and periodic cleaning, including cleaning of lights, vents, ceilings, walls, floors, and other surfaces as assigned.
  • Physically check and secure designated doors and areas in accordance with assigned procedures.
  • Accurately and timely document completed tasks and assigned work through the hospital Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and other required records.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with patients, visitors, coworkers, supervisors, and other hospital departments and respond appropriately to service requests.
  • Follow supervisor direction and assigned work priorities, including changes in work areas, schedules, or duties necessary to meet operational needs.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidential hospital information in accordance with HIPAA, hospital policy, and applicable confidentiality requirements.
  • Comply with all EVS and Mason District Hospital policies, procedures, safety requirements, and required education or competency expectations.
  • Participate in on-call assignments and work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, or emergency coverage as required by departmental and hospital operations.
  • Monitor assigned areas for maintenance needs such as wear and tear, damage, unsafe conditions, or other hazards and promptly submit a work request to maintenance.
  • Foster a professional and confidential relationship with staff and patients, encouraging open communication, trust, and a high standard of professionalism within the department and the hospital.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the organization.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods and movement between hospital units, clinics, and other assigned areas.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, and repetitive motions associated with mopping, wiping, scrubbing, and other cleaning duties.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment, supplies, trash containers, and carts weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, biohazardous materials, infectious conditions, cleaning chemicals, and other occupational hazards requiring donning and doffing of appropriate PPE (gloves, masks, gowns, etc.) and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Work in a fast-paced, high-traffic healthcare setting requiring timely response to spills, disinfection needs, and patient room turnovers.
  • Work in varying environmental conditions and temperatures, including patient rooms, clinical areas, hallways, procedural areas, and outdoor waste disposal areas.
  • Regular interaction with patients, visitors, and healthcare staff requiring professionalism, discretion, and adherence to infection prevention and confidentiality requirements.
  • May be required to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and emergency coverage based on operational needs.
