Job summary

Looking Glass Community Services is seeking a Cook to plan meals and prepare nutritious, appealing meals for youth and staff in a residential program. You will maintain sanitation, follow safety guidelines, and work as part of an integrated team.

The schedule is Sunday through Wednesday with coverage for PTO; experience with USDA standards and knowledge of kitchen operations is required. Valid Oregon driver’s license and basic computer skills are expected.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification: Food Handler's License.
  • Experience: Institutional or volume cooking experience.
  • Availability: Sunday - Wednesday, with coverage for PTO hours.
  • Driver's License: Valid in Oregon with insurable record.
  • Knowledge of USDA standards.
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Knowledge of proper storage and use of food.
  • Ability to work as a member of an integrated team.
  • Ability to relate effectively with youth, parents, community, and referral sources.
  • Ability to work in a structured, often stressful environment and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to maintain a sanitary kitchen facility.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills: MS Office, email, spreadsheets.
  • Cultural sensitivity and experience with diverse backgrounds.
  • Professional appearance appropriate to the position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop menus and prepare nutritious, appealing meals for youth and staff (25-45 people).
  • Develop and maintain a recipe file.
  • Purchase food, household supplies, and hygienic items within a budget.
  • Order and pick up donated food from community food bank and other sources.
  • Report kitchen maintenance needs to supervisor and follow up as appropriate.
  • Maintain records required by the Oregon Department of Education Breakfast, Lunch, and Milk Programs.
  • Assist with supervising youth working in the kitchen.
  • Prepare food for off-duty days.
  • Prepare large amounts of food by freezing or drying.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Job description

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Cook is responsible for meal planning and cooking meals for the residents. Maintains sanitation and follows necessary guidelines for food handling and safety.

Expected schedule: Sunday - Wednesday with some coverage of staff absences (PTO/Leaves)

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Certification: Food Handler's License
  3. Experience: Institutional or volume cooking experience.
  4. Availability:Sunday - Wednesday plus some scheduled coverage for PTO hours
  5. Driver's License: Valid in Oregon, acceptable record, and insurability under Agency's auto insurance.
  6. Knowledge of USDA standards.
  7. Knowledge of proper use and care of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  8. Knowledge of proper storage and use of food.
  9. Ability to work effectively as a member of an integrated team.
  10. Ability to relate effectively with youth, parents, community, and referral sources.
  11. Ability to work in a structured, often stressful, environment and maintain a positive mental attitude.
  12. Ability to maintain a sanitary kitchen facility.
  13. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  14. Good communication skills.

  6. Maintains records required by the Oregon Department of Education Breakfast Program, Lunch Program, and Milk Program, including meeting nutritional requirements, meal counts, milk counts, monthly inventory and cost/clients meals assessment.
  7. Assists with supervising youth working in the kitchen.
  8. Prepares food for off-duty days.
  9. Prepares large amounts of food as necessary by freezing or drying.
  10. Completes other duties as assigned.
