Job summary

Gwinnett County Government seeks a part-time Animal Control Officer in Georgia to monitor animal health, disinfect cages, feed and medicate animals, and respond to field complaints tied to local authorities.

The position may require on-call rotations, after-hours, weekends, and holidays. A pre-employment drug test is required and the role is safety-sensitive.

Qualifications

• Pre‑exposure rabies vaccine or current titer completed within 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Assisting with maintaining records on animals, including intakes and adoptions, and maintaining medical charts.
• Maintaining logs on diseases, medications, and treatments.
• Investigating cruelty and abandonment and gathering information for prosecutions.
• Assisting field officers with shelter operations and animal intake.
• Assisting the public with shelter tours for lost or adoptable animals.
• Conducting rabies quarantine checks and assisting in related duties.

Class Summary

This is a part‑time position with a maximum of 1,508 hours per year and is not eligible for paid holidays, leave, or benefits.

Job Description

This part‑time Animal Control Officer will train to monitor and ensure all animals are in good health, cages are disinfected and clean to ensure a disease‑free living environment, and ensure animals are properly fed, watered, and issued any required medication. Officers assigned to field operations may respond to citizen complaints of stray, vicious, sick, injured, or diseased animals, and work with local authorities.

Essential Duties

• Assisting with maintaining various records on animals, including processing intakes and adoptions, reviewing and upkeeping medical charts, and keeping records of animals held for court cases.
• Maintaining logs on all diseases, medications, and treatments as required by state and federal regulations.
• Assisting with investigating cruelty and abandonment of domestic animals and livestock, and working closely with senior officers to gather information used to prosecute violators.
• Assisting field officers in unloading, checking in, and relocating animals in the shelter.
• Assisting with intake activities on animals.
• Assisting the public with touring the shelter for lost or adoptable animals.
• Assisting with investigating reported bite cases, and conducting rabies quarantine checks to verify quarantine requirements are met.
• Assisting in the decapitation, preparation, and transportation of specimens to the state laboratory for testing.
• Assisting in euthanizing animals and participating in other functions assigned to the euthanasia laboratory.

Public Speaking Duties

• May assist with adoption and/or outreach events.
• Must be proficient in English communication, capable of clear and professional verbal and written expression.

Other Job Requirements/Information

• This job is a safety‑sensitive position that will require a pre‑employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
• This job may require on‑call rotation and emergency after‑hours, weekends, and/or holidays.

Hourly Rate

The hourly rate is $15.75.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
• Pre‑exposure rabies vaccine or current titer completed within 6 months of employment.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of animal control experience.
• Euthanasia training.
• Asp Baton Certificate.
• Defensive Driving Certificate.
• Basic Chemical Capture training.
• Crematory training.
