Job summary

YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester is seeking an enthusiastic After-School Program Assistant to work with UPK classes in Crompond and Yorktown Heights, NY. This part-time, 10-month role follows the local school calendar and supports children aged 3-5 with engaging activities after school hours.

You will assist with crafts, games, and routines, supervise children, and uphold YMCA values in a school-based preschool program.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Experience with young children is preferred.
• Coursework or a degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field is preferred.
• Knowledge of age-appropriate activities for 3-5 year olds is preferred.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Patience, maturity, dependability, and genuine interest in working with young children.
• Ability to maintain a safe, positive environment.
• Follow directions and respond to children's needs.

Responsibilities

• Assist UPK teaching team with daily after-school activities (arts, crafts, games, music, movement, outdoor play).
• Provide a safe, nurturing, inclusive environment for all children.
• Actively supervise children and maintain child-to-staff ratios.
• Support daily classroom routines, transitions, snack, and rest periods.
• Encourage positive social interactions and social-emotional development.
• Build positive relationships with children, families, teachers, and YMCA staff.
• Demonstrate YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility.
• Assist with classroom organization, cleaning, sanitizing, and materials prep.
• Follow YMCA policies, health and safety procedures, and childcare regulations.
• Communicate questions or concerns to UPK Teacher or Program Director.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Participate in required YMCA training and meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
