Job summary

After School Matters seeks part-time instructors to teach its American Sign Language program during summer, fall, and spring for high school teens at the Lutz Center. Instructors will cover ASL vocabulary, basic grammar, and Deaf Culture in a collaborative setting.

Sessions vary by season with flexible scheduling, including weekend options. Compensation is $32 per hour, commensurate with experience, and opportunities for planning and professional development are provided.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching, specifically teenagers, is highly preferred.
  • Culturally competent in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion is required.

Responsibilities

  • Expose teens to education, linguistics, and communication industries in a positive, safe learning environment.
  • Maintain knowledge of education, linguistics, and communication concepts.
  • Prepare, organize, and supervise weekly lessons on Deaf culture, ASL vocabulary/grammar, and body language/facial expressions.
  • Develop and implement field trips, master classes, events, and guest visits to enhance instruction.
  • Provide supervision during program field trips and youth engagement opportunities.
  • Report problems or updates to the ASM Program Specialist to maintain communications.
  • Attend planning and program dates, orientation, and professional development sessions.
  • Participate in recruitment, interviews, and selection of teen participants.
  • Manage and track activities such as attendance, enrollment, and surveys in CitySpan.
  • Supervise teens at an average ratio of 15:1, instructor to teen.
