Job summary

The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is seeking a Seasonal Tree Care Volunteer Program Coordinator to lead volunteer tree projects across Montgomery Parks. You’ll recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, coordinate events with partners, and manage program records, prioritizing equity areas and community engagement.

The role involves both office and field work, with some evenings/weekends.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and lead the Volunteer Tree Care Program, including volunteer recruitment, scheduling, training, on-site education, and stewardship activities.
• Manage volunteer projects, special events, and outreach, especially in Equity Areas with staff collaboration.
• Support Forestry and Park Operations tree projects with site prep, supplies, and volunteer engagement.
• Maintain volunteer, tree care, and project records in Samaritan, Tree Keepers, and other databases; analyze data.
• Monitor budget-related activities with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Provide professional customer service and effective communication with volunteers and partners.
• Work in both office and field settings, up to five hours daily and 1–2 miles of walking when needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Overview:

This position plays a critical role in protecting and enhancing Montgomery Parks' urban forest resources, strengthening community stewardship, and supporting the long-term sustainability, safety, and beauty of the County's parks and natural areas. The Seasonal Tree Care Volunteer Program Coordinator will work alongside Tree Care Volunteer Program Assistant, Urban Forest Patch Program Manager, and the Southern Parks Operations Rapid Response Team under the supervision of the Volunteer Service and Community Partnership Supervisor on volunteer based tree initiatives and community service efforts in the Southern Management Area in Montgomery County Parks. The grant funded position will coordinate the Montgomery Parks Volunteer Tree Care Program, participate in special/seasonal events (examples include Earth Month, Community Service Week, and National Public Lands Day), and aid in additional projects and programs that involve the VSO.

The position will also have the opportunity to work with non-profit organization partners, watershed groups, school groups and community volunteers.

About the Volunteer Services Office

The Volunteer Services Office provides central coordination and management of volunteer and community service programs. Functions include planning and consultation, recruitment, outreach, screening, training, recognition, data collection and management, and evaluation. Volunteer resources include students, corporate partners, and traditional volunteers. The Volunteer Services Office serves as a key liaison between Montgomery Parks staff and a variety of volunteer and community-based groups countywide. These include friends groups, watershed groups, non-profit organizations, and volunteer groups that work with Parks on annual projects or seasonal programs while providing participants with valuable volunteer experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Interest in environmental education, forestry, parks, recreation, or community engagement.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team while managing multiple tasks.
• Experience supporting volunteer programs, outdoor projects, or community events.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse communities and volunteers.
• Spanish or other language skills are a plus.
• Valid driver's license required. Experience safely operating small trucks and other work-related vehicles preferred; CDL license not required.

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments.
• Frequent work in parks, stream valleys, and natural areas throughout Montgomery County.
• Ability to walk significant distances over uneven terrain and work in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work in streams and other outdoor environments with potentially slippery or unstable surfaces.
• Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Additional Details:

• Hourly Rate: $29.00 - $32.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
• Selected candidates must successfully complete a background investigation.
• Some remote work may be available based on operational needs.
• Training will be provided on volunteer program administration, volunteer management software, field safety, public engagement, environmental education resources, and other departmental procedures
