Job summary

City of Belén Parks Department is seeking a Parks Technician I to perform entry-level park maintenance, turf management, irrigation work, shade structures, and related repairs at city parks.

This full-time regular position requires operating lawn equipment, maintaining playgrounds and lighting, coordinating seasonal tasks, and supporting city events. Applicants must have a high school diploma, a valid New Mexico driver’s license, and the ability to work flexible hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED required.
  • A valid New Mexico’s driver’s license required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, days and holidays as directed.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule with minimal supervision.
  • Must pass pre-employment background and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine park maintenance.
  • Maintains lighting fixtures, irrigation systems.
  • Maintains playground equipment.
  • Performs regular sprinkler systems maintenance; to include line sizes, spacing, type and control equipment.
  • Operates lawn mowing equipment; mows and trims grass, bushes and shrubs; assists in pruning activities on trees, shrubs and plants; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees.
  • Operates various small equipment to turn and prepare soil.
  • Assures lawns are trim and attractive.
  • Performs seasonal duties such as winterizing sprinkler system to avoid freezing, flushes watering systems in spring, and repairs other equipment.
  • Performs general cleanup, maintenance, and repair of rest rooms, pavilions, playgrounds, picnic tables, benches, bleachers, ball fields and other facilities.
  • Performs various seasonal duties such as snow removal and weed control, etc.
  • Work flexible hours, days and holidays as directed.
  • Ensures quality customer service.
  • Assists with City functions and events.
  • Performs related duties as required.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Parks Technician I

FULL-TIME REGULAR

Starting annual salary $34,756 ($16.71 an hour)

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a wide variety of entry level semi-skilled duties related to planning, coordinating and directing all phases of park maintenance to include turf management and beautification, irrigation systems, shade structures, and construction and repair.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Performs routine park maintenance.
  • Assures proper operation of lighting fixtures, irrigation systems.
  • Assures proper installation and maintenance of playground equipment.
  • Performs regular sprinkler systems maintenance; to include line sizes, spacing, type and control equipment.
  • Operates lawn mowing equipment; mows and trims grass, bushes and shrubs; assists in pruning activities on trees, shrubs and plants; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees.

EQUIPMENT USED

Knowledge to include use of landscaping equipment, maintenance equipment. Knowledge on using a two-way radio, ladders, work tools, power tool, tractor, and gator.
