Summary

The Parks Maintenance Technician I assists with a variety of entry-level to semi-skilled duties in the areas of general maintenance, landscaping, construction, and equipment operation in the Town’s parks, trails, athletic fields, municipal building and grounds, rights-of-way, streets, landscaped areas, urban forest, and open space. This position is an entry-level role for the department and reports directly to the Parks Foreman. This position requires general proficiency in all areas of landscape, horticulture, arboriculture, and forestry, and will be cross-trained in all aspects of Parks Maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The below list is intended to illustrate the responsibilities of the position and is not all-encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.

  • Assists with a variety of routine maintenance and construction activities including turf maintenance, athletic field maintenance, playground maintenance, trails maintenance, hardscape maintenance, general forestry, open space, and horticultural assignments
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment, such as; mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, edgers, sprayers, trucks, trailers, wood chippers, chain saws, power tools, and various hand tools
  • May be required to make minor repairs or adjustments and perform preventative maintenance on equipment or provide a reasonable possible solution
  • Assists with inspection of playgrounds, park amenities, construction activities, and athletic fields for safety and compliance with Town standards and assists with ADA site assessments and records data
  • Mows, weeds, trims, and renovates grassy areas
  • Maintains planting beds in Town parks, along trails, and on municipal grounds
  • Plants, prunes, maintains and removes landscaped trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers
  • Cleans trash from the Town’s parks, trails, municipal grounds, rights-of-way, and open space and maintains trash receptacles; stocks and maintains doggie bag dispensers
  • Cleans, stocks, and maintains the restrooms and shelters within the Town’s parks
  • Assists with maintenance of trails and open space, including; identifying and correcting safety hazards, mowing, mulching, constructing and maintaining facilities, benches, underpasses, signs, kiosks, fences, and landscaped features, grading crusher fine trails
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides in accordance with prescribed guidelines, maintains usage records according to the CO Department of Agriculture standards
  • Assists with the installation and repair of park equipment and facilities, such as; playground equipment, picnic tables, benches, pavilions, restrooms, and other fixtures or facilities
  • Performs a variety of duties that require the use and wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Performs routine pre/post-use safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment and maintains records of such activities
  • Clears snow, leaves, and debris on trails, right-of-ways, sidewalks, parking lots, and municipal grounds using hand tools and small engine machinery
  • Assists with various Town events and festival set-up and tear-down activities
  • Facilitates good communication with other Town staff and the public, which may include sharing information and receiving feedback, listening to and respecting input, participating in workgroup conversations, and directly and respectfully dealing with issues that arise
  • Actively promotes a culture of safety by observing and following all Town and Department safety procedures, regulations, and policies and assists in ensuring others do so to promote a safe work environment and prevent injuries and illnesses
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints as instructed by the Parks Foreman
  • May work in confined spaces that require ventilation to protect against potential noxious gases and fumes
  • Responsible for entering and completing work orders in the iWorq work order system
  • May be required to work overtime, be on-call and/or work a varying schedule including weekends and during emergency situations
  • Participates in ongoing training for personal and professional development

  • Ability to use or learn to use hand tools and light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, bobcats, snow plows, trailers, loaders, small to large walk-behind and riding mowers, sprayers, compressors and tractors with implements
  • Knowledge of proper safety protocols when working with all equipment and heavy machinery
  • Knowledge of all parks, trails systems, and open space within Firestone within the first 90 days of employment
  • Ability to independently perform all of the essential duties of this position within the first 90 days of employment
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems or provide a reasonable possible solution
  • Ability to remove snow and ice on Town-owned sidewalks, facility parking lots, park parking lots, and trails
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and to recognize, report, and correct problems in parks and open space (broken sprinkler heads, playground equipment, etc.)
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence, memos, maps, and drawings and perform common mathematical operations
  • Strong problem-solving skills that include the ability to analyze and resolve a variety of issues and recognize when to elevate
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computers, tablets, and software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS mapping, and databases
  • Ability to complete daily operations in a competent and safe manner, and perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with supervisors, other Town staff, and the general public
  • Ability to keep workplace clean and organized, equipment clean and serviced, and take care of Town-owned assets appropriately
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in verbal and written form
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to achieve goals and handle assignments with efficiency and personal accountability
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in parks maintenance, landscape, or construction or related experience preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver license and a safe driving record throughout employment; Class B CDL license is preferred
  • Must obtain within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment a Pesticide Technician certification
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Flagger certification within three (3) months of employment
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Confined Space certification within three (3) months of employment

Work is regularly performed outdoors and occasionally indoors, with frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and all weather conditions. Work is performed year-round with regular exposure to any of the following: loud noise, heavy traffic, and some hazardous situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with times of increased noise.

Body Movement:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, bend, stoop, or kneel. On rare occasions, the employee may be required to climb, crawl and balance. The employee must be physically able to operate various motor vehicles. An employee is required to be available and on-call at various hours. Employees must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Vision:

Employees must be able to consistently see with near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field vision.

Hearing:

Employees must have the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (e.g., machinery, telephones, alarms); communicate clearly and effectively; understand and be understood; be able to consistently engage in ordinary conversations.
