Job summary

Ottawa County is seeking a part-time, year-round park maintenance worker to join the Parks Department. The role includes a wide range of tasks from carpentry and repairs to trail grooming, snow removal and grounds upkeep across various sites.

Ideal candidates will have experience with hand and power tools, chainsaws, mowers or light construction equipment, plus a flexible schedule including evenings and holidays. 18+ and HS diploma preferred.

Job description

Under the supervision of the Construction and Special Projects Supervisor or other Parks Supervisor as assigned, completes a wide variety of park maintenance operations and project work at various sites. Examples of work include repair carpentry, winter cross-country ski trail grooming, seasonal park prep (snow fence, beach walkway installation, kayak launch installation), downed tree removal, general building and grounds clean up, snow removal, trail maintenance, painting, chipping brush, trimming, trees and other related tasks. Candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule year-round depending on needs, but typically 2-4 days a week.

This is a part-time, year-round, limited-benefited position working anywhere from 10-32 hours per week depending on the season, reporting to the Parks Operations Center located at 16777 Fillmore Street, West Olive, MI. Must be available for day, evening, weekend, and holiday work hours. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience with use of a chainsaw and common hand and power tools used in household carpentry, electrical or plumbing repairs, have the ability to interact positively and constructively with the general public and co-workers, have a willingness to learn, and proven dependability. Preference will be given to candidates with experience operating commercial mowers, small tractors, or light construction equipment.

Must be 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED preferred.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Performs seasonal building and grounds maintenance in the spring and fall and makes repairs and improvements at other times as needed.
2. Performs a wide variety of grounds work including cutting and transporting firewood, snow removal, trail construction and maintenance, tree trimming and removal, constructing boardwalks and bridges, painting, repairing tables and benches, chipping brush, and removing invasive plant species, grooming cross-country ski trails.
3. Operates equipment as needed, including mowers and tractors, chippers, snowmobiles and other equipment.
4. Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner and to the standards established by the Parks Commission and administered by management staff.
5. Performs other functions as assigned.

Licenses and Certifications:

A valid Michigan Driver's License may be required for some positions. Must be insurable under Ottawa County's current automobile insurance at time of hire and throughout employment.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

1. Working knowledge of the maintenance construction trades, including painting, carpentry, electrical and electronic repair, plumbing, etc.
2. Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing preventive and emergency maintenance practices.
3. Operating knowledge of a variety of mowers, brush hogs, edgers, chainsaws, snow removal, trail grooming and other equipment used in park maintenance.
4. Working knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance construction trades.
5. Ability to layout work efficiently so as to minimize man-hours and materials required to properly complete work.
6. Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHAoccupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements.
7. Thorough working knowledge of safety protocols and practices.

Physical Requirements:

1. Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to visually align components of structural features, equipment, operating systems, etc.; accurately readgaugesand take measurements; and identify damage to or deterioration of facility features, fixtures, furnishings, operating systems and components thereof.
2. Must have sufficient visual color discrimination to properly match color-coded pairs of electrical wires.
3. Must have sufficient auditory ability, with or without audiological devices, to hear alarms, other warning signals and vehicle signals indicating backward or forward motion.
4. Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level several times per day to repair features and fixtures mounted at or near ground/floor level.
5. Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level for the entire length of shift to repair or replace features, fixtures, systems and/or components thereof mounted at or above shoulder height.
6. Must be able to ascend/descend ladders in order to access features, fixtures, systems and/or components thereof located in ceilings or on rooftops.
7. Must be able to operate and ride in lift devices to access rooftops and exterior lighting systems.
8. Must have sufficient manual strength and dexterity to use small hand and power tools.
9. Must be able to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 80 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance.
10. Must have sufficient strength and mobility in wrists, elbows and shoulders to operate power tools commonly used in construction trades.
11. Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures; dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne particulates; and inclement weather conditions.
12. Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial and other chemicals, solvents, adhesives, caulks and other compounds and chemicals commonly used in facilities maintenance.
13. Must be able to enter and maneuver in confined spaces in order to access mechanical rooms and operating systems.
14. Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.

Working Conditions:

While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is exposed to moving mechanical hazards; electrical hazards; noxious fumes; dust, dirt, and other airborne particulates; inclement weather, including extreme temperatures, wind, rain and snow; bloodborne pathogens; cleaning compounds; solvents; detergents; noise; and other hazards. Hours and days worked will vary by season with the majority occurring in spring and fall. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required.
