Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada is seeking an Overnight Support Staff member for the Parker House family shelter in Sacramento. This part-time role runs 10:30pm–7:00am, Monday through Thursday, providing short-term emergency housing and supportive services for homeless families with children.

You will work in a safe, non-judgmental environment, coordinating daily routines, assisting residents, and supporting staff in implementing care plans to achieve program goals.

PROGRAM AND LOCATION

VOA-NCNN, a Certified Great Place to Work, is recruiting for part-time overnight Support Staff for the Family Shelter at our Parker House program. Parker House is an 85-bed facility providing short-term emergency housing (up to 30 days) and intensive supportive services for homeless families with dependent children. This position will be between the hours of 10:30pm and 7:00am the following day Monday - Thursday.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Support Staff is responsible for assuring quality service in a safe, non-judgmental manner to all program participants compassionately and professionally as it relates to the specific program objectives. Objectives include supportive interaction with program participants and team members, assessment of participant’s needs, supporting the safety and the integrity of all residents, and performance of all work duties as required. Work is performed in a cost-effective and service-oriented manner as it relates to established organizational standards.

OBJECTIVES/ACTIVITIES

• Responsible for performing daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the department.
• Explain program rules and regulations to residents and facilitate residents’ observance of the rules.
• Coordinate meal preparation/service, bed/sleeping assignments, showers, laundering, and other daily routines.
• Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain grounds security at all Conduct hourly safety and security checks during designated periods.
• De-escalate crisis before it develops and respond to crisis in an appropriate manner, providing emergency assistance to clients and co-workers as necessary.

EQUIVALENT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

This position requires demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions and to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices. It requires general knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and people with disabilities. Must be able to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning. Must have the flexibility to work irregular hours and have the willingness to function as a team member. Computer skills required. Must pass all required background clearances in accordance with agency, County, State, and federal standards. CPR/First Aid certification is required within 90 days of employment. Completion and maintenance of all required training and health clearances.
