City of Norwalk is seeking a grounds maintenance worker to perform manual work in parks and recreational areas, including upkeep of benches, fences, posts, rails and signs.
The role involves assisting with vehicle prep, equipment operation, and following standard safety procedures to keep facilities clean and safe for the community.
Performs manual work in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of parks, grounds and recreational areas or facilities.
Receives oral instructions from Supervisor or lead worker, who reviews work in progress. Assists lead worker in preparing vehicles and equipment, loading materials and in positioning equipment. Services vehicles and equipment with fuel, lubricants and accessories. Carries out work according to standard procedures. Utilizes both hand tools and power equipment to complete assigned tasks. Performs manual work in the removal of trees, leaves, brush, trash or refuse and in the installation or replacement of benches, fences, posts, rails or signs. Uses hand tools to plant and care for trees, shrubs and flower beds. Operates equipment to mow and maintain fields and recreational areas. Also grades, fertilizes, seeds and lines playing fields. During operation, observes performance of equipment and reports malfunction to supervisor. Cleans and maintains equipment, facilities and grounds. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations. Reports tasks accomplished verbally to supervisor.
Relieves Maintainer of higher grade as operator of equipment. Performs semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of recreational facilities and equipment, including painting. May operate spraying equipment. Performs heavy manual work in the removal of debris and trees from recreational areas. Participates in departmental snow removal operations.
Receives on the job supervision from Foreman or lead worker.

Local 2405 Grade 03
Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 25-50 pounds. Ability to use hand tools and equipment requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude. Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and snow. Sufficient stamina and good health to perform strenuous physical labor.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions andone year of general grounds maintenance experience
