Job summary

Berkeley County First Steps is seeking a Parent Educator to implement the Parents As Teachers home visiting program under the Parenting and Community Support Director. You will visit families in their homes, at least twice monthly, and provide child development guidance and connections to resources to support school readiness.

About Berkeley County First Steps

The mission of the Berkeley County First Steps Partnership Board is to improve the early childhood development of Berkeley County children by providing resources and leadership to assist families in preparing their children to reach school healthy and ready to succeed through community partnerships and collaboration.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Berkeley County Parenting and Community Support Director, the Berkeley Parent Educator will implement the Parents As Teachers home visiting program. Home visitors use the family's home environment to help create rich learning opportunities that build on everyday routines and set the stage for school readiness. Parent Educators will visit each family no less than twice per month; and provide one group socialization per month. Visits will include child development training for parents; activities for parent and child; health and developmental screenings and results review; providing resources and referrals; and support with any issues or concerns the parent may have.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implements the Parents As Teachers (PAT) Curriculum model.Using the PAT model, supports parent-child interactions and offers information and activities that align with the family's goals.
  • Conducts development screenings for infants and toddlers using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ).
  • Observes and assesses each child’s development and utilizes results of developmental screenings to help identify any special needs.
  • Prioritizes the health and safety of children enrolled in the program.
  • Travels to the homes of families on the assigned caseload.
  • Conducts family needs assessment.
Qualifications
  • BA in Early Childhood Education, Human Services, or Social Sciences preferred. AA in Early Childhood Education or related field with minimum two years’ experience may be considered.
  • Experience as a parent educator and/or with performing home visits preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with caregivers and their young children in an educational or social service setting using a trauma-informed, culturally congruent approach to relationship building.
