Daniel Boone Area School District is seeking a dedicated One-on-One Special Education Aide Life Skills to provide direct 1:1 support for a student in the Life Skills program. You will assist with functional academics, daily living skills, and communication, under the supervision of licensed staff.

The role involves implementing accommodations and safety procedures, observing progress, and helping with transitions and daily activities within the school day.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct 1:1 support to the assigned student throughout the school day per the IEP.
  • Assist with functional academic instruction including reading, math, communication, and life skills.
  • Reinforce instruction from the special education teacher or other certified professional.
  • Support daily living and independent living skills such as organization, hygiene, and social behavior.
  • Assist with communication using augmentative or alternative devices when applicable.
  • Observe and document student progress and communicate changes to staff.
  • Help implement behavior plans under qualified staff supervision.
  • Attend training and professional development related to Life Skills needs.

One-on-One Special Education Aide Life Skills

183 days per school year

Requirements for the Position
  • A high school diploma
  • The ability to work harmoniously with students and teachers
  • Experience in organizational skills
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with computers, preferred but not required.
  • The individual's credentials are in compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations governing individuals functioning in the capacity of this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct 1:1 support to the assigned student throughout the school day in accordance with the student's IEP and individual needs.
  • Assist the student with functional academic instruction, including reading, communication, mathematics, money skills, time concepts, and other practical learning activities.
  • Reinforce instruction and skills introduced by the special education teacher or other certified professional.
  • Support instruction in daily living and independent living skills, including personal organization, hygiene, appropriate social behavior, meal routines, and other functional activities.
  • Assist the student with communication skills, including the use of augmentative or alternative communication devices when applicable.
  • Support the development of appropriate social skills and interactions with peers and adults.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, visual supports, schedules, reinforcement systems, and other strategies identified by the student's educational team.
  • Assist with implementation of the student's behavior intervention or support plan, when applicable, under the direction of qualified staff.
  • Support the student during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, specials, vocational activities, community-based instruction, field trips, arrival, dismissal, and other school activities.
  • Provide assistance with toileting, feeding, dressing, hygiene, mobility, positioning, and other personal-care needs, when required by the student's individual plan and when appropriately trained.
  • Assist the student with adaptive equipment, assistive technology, mobility devices, or specialized materials as directed.
  • Observe student performance and behavior and collect or document data as requested by the supervising teacher.
  • Prompt and redirect the student appropriately while encouraging the student to complete tasks as independently as possible.
  • Promote student independence by gradually reducing adult assistance when appropriate and as directed by the student's educational team.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while providing consistent, supportive, and respectful assistance.
  • Follow established health and safety procedures and respond appropriately to student needs or emergencies.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student educational, behavioral, medical, and personal information.
  • Communicate observations, concerns, progress, or changes in student behavior to the supervising teacher or appropriate staff.
  • Participate in training and professional development related to the needs of students served within the Life Skills program.
  • Perform other duties related to the position as assigned by the teacher or administrator.
