Job summary

Allentown School District is seeking an instructional paraprofessional to support students with disabilities under certificated staff direction. The role includes one‑on‑one or small group tutoring, classroom management, and implementing IEP‑driven tasks.

You will assist teachers with instructional strategies, collect progress data, maintain student records, and help with transitions and daily activities within the school environment.

Qualifications

  • Must meet educational requirements for highly qualified paraprofessional as defined by federal laws, No Child Left Behind, and IDEA, and meet Chapter 14 PA Code 22.
  • Must meet basic reading, writing, and math competencies.
  • Valid Act 34, 114, and Act 151 clearances.
  • Valid tuberculosis test and physical examination with ADA accommodations as appropriate.
  • Must meet annual obligations of Chapter 14, PA Code 22: 20 hours of staff development.
  • U.S. citizen or holder of a valid work visa.
  • Additional qualifications may be determined by the board or superintendent.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the principal and other professionals in maintaining a safe and orderly school environment.
  • Assist special education and regular education teachers in delivering instructional and tutorial strategies per the IEP.
  • Under the teacher’s direction, provide instructional support to reinforce lessons (e.g., administering tests, tutoring).
  • Collect observational and academic data for progress monitoring.
  • Maintain students’ files/records for documentation and reliable information.
  • Follow and implement positive behavior support plans.
  • Handle students’ personal needs (e.g., feeding, toileting) as needed.
  • Assist with safe transitions to/from locations and environments within and around the school.
  • Participate in specialized training related to needs of students with IEPs.
  • Maintain confidentiality per FERPA and Chapter 14.
  • Respond to emergencies per standing orders.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Superintendent, principal, or Director of Special Education.
  • Reassign paraprofessionals to support students when a colleague is absent.

Starting Salary: $21.12/hr.

Qualifications

  • Such additional or alternatives to the above qualifications as the board or superintendent may determine appropriate and acceptable.
Summary

An instructional paraprofessional works under the direction of a certificated staff member to support and provide instructional, behavioral, and functional programs for children with disabilities or eligible young children. The support includes one‑on‑one or group review of materials taught by certificated staff, classroom management, and implementation of positive behavior support plans. Services may be provided in special education, regular education, or other instructional settings as indicated by an IEP.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Handle students’ personal needs (e.g., feeding, toileting, diapering) as needed.
  • Assist with safe transitions to/from locations and environments within and around the school.
  • Participate in specialized training related to specific needs of students with IEPs.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations and Chapter 14.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations per standing orders.
  • Perform other tasks within the expectations of this job category or assume responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent, principal, or Director of Special Education.
  • Reassign paraprofessionals to support students when a colleague is absent (short‑term) based on priority of needs.
  • Reassign paraprofessionals during a student’s absence to continue support for other special education students.
