Job summary

Wythe County Public Schools is seeking a Paraprofessional at Spiller Elementary School in Wytheville, VA. This 182‑day position supports teachers with instruction, supervision, and routine classroom tasks.

The ideal candidate will follow directions, assist with small groups, manage materials, and help maintain confidential student records while fostering a safe learning environment.

Qualifications

• Is at least 21 years of age.
• Successfully candidates must be highly qualified.
• High School diploma or GED equivalent required.

Responsibilities

• Assists classroom teacher in performing duties to meet objectives.
• Records test data as assigned.
• Performs clerical duties and maintains files with confidentiality.
• Works with small groups or individuals to reinforce material.
• Provides programmed practice activities and repetitions.
• Assists students with computer-based instructional activities.
• Assists with large group activities.
• Escorts students to classes and activities.
• Guides independent study as assigned by teachers.
• Advises teachers on student problems (instructional or behavioral).
• Assists students with disabilities and bus loading/unloading.
• Supports breakfast, lunch, and hygiene routines.
• Encourages continuation of tasks from OT & PT when appropriate.
• Maintains confidentiality of student/school information.
• Participates in in-service training as assigned.
• Performs other duties as required by teachers or principal.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Is at least 21 years of age.
2. Successful candidates must be highly qualified.
3. High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
4. Accurately follows oral and written directions.
5. Effectively controls a group, independent of an immediate supervisor.
6. Previous school-based experience with children is preferred but not required.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Assists classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks to achieve and enhance instructional objectives.
2. Records test data as assigned.
3. Performs clerical duties and assists with maintaining various records and files. Files, test scores, and related records are kept confidential.
4. Works with small groups or individuals to reinforce materials introduced by the teacher(s).
5. Provides programmed practice activities and repetitions.
6. Works with computers to assist students with instructional activities.
7. Assists with large group activities.
8. Escorts students to special classes, library, physical education, etc.
9. Guides independent study and other work as assigned by teacher(s).
10. Advises teacher(s) on students’ problems (instructional or behavioral).
11. Assists students with disabilities, loading and unloading buses.
12. Assists students or an assigned student with breakfast, lunch, snacks, clean up, lavatory, clothing, personal hygiene, and wash-up routines.
13. Encourages students to continue special tasks as practiced in OT & PT if appropriate.
14. Maintains confidentiality of student and school-related information.
15. Participates in in-service training programs as assigned.
16. Performs other duties as required by the assigned teacher(s) or principal.

Terms of employment: 182 days per year
