Job summary

City of Roanoke is seeking Part-time Paramedics to provide advanced emergency medical services under high-pressure conditions. Requirements include EMT-P certification, AHA, ACLS, PHTLS, PALS, and EVOC/driver’s license; must be 18+, able to pass a drug test, and available 8 am–8 pm for 3–4 days per month. Bilingual Spanish/English encouraged.

No city benefits for this role. The position supports Roanoke Fire/EMS, performing EMS duties, equipment maintenance, and administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must possess EMT-P and all listed certifications (AHA, ACLS, PHTLS, PALS) for duty within Fire/EMS.
  • Must be 18 years old and able to pass a drug screening.
  • Must be able to work 8 am–8 pm, average 3–4 days a month.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Provide human health emergency medical services under emergency conditions.
  • Maintain equipment inventory on emergency vehicles.
  • Keep vehicles clean and in working order.
  • Respond to fire alarms and EMS calls and perform related emergency work.
  • Provide patient care and administer advanced life support techniques.
  • Prepare reports and complete records as required.
  • Assist in non-emergency activities (public standby situations).
  • May supervise staff at an emergency scene.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in maintaining equipment inventory on emergency vehicles
  • Maintains vehicles in a clean and working order
  • Performs daily routine station and grounds cleaning and assigned maintenance as directed
  • Responds to fire alarms and emergency medical calls and performs related emergency work as required
  • Provides patient care and administers advanced life support techniques and treatment
  • Prepares a variety of reports and complete records as required
  • Assists in activities not directly related to emergencies (i.e. public standby situations)
  • Must be able to work 8 am to 8 pm, average 3-4 days a month.
Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise staff at an emergency scene.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Associate degree with courses in emergency health sciences or related field; related experience and/or training in emergency medical service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be at least 19 years old.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license and EVOC issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must possess and maintain EMT-P, AHA, ACLS, PHTLS, PALS and any other required certifications appropriate to duty assignment within the Fire/EMS department.
