Job summary

Waverly Health Center in Iowa seeks a Paramedic to provide emergency and hospital-based patient care in pre-hospital and acute settings. You will follow Iowa EMS Scope of Practice guidelines, administer life support, and coordinate care with physicians.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited Paramedic program, Iowa Paramedic certification (or RN Exempt Paramedic), English fluency, and strong communication.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Paramedic program with valid Iowa Paramedic certification or RN Exempt Paramedic as defined by the State.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English; strong knowledge of emergency care equipment and procedures.
  • Prior paramedic experience preferred and commitment to patient care excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Administers life support care in pre-hospital settings under physician direction per Iowa EMS guidelines.
  • Provides hospital-based patient care as directed; assists with EKGs and IV/fluid administration.
  • Administers bronchodilator medications and supports respiratory therapy activities.
  • Performs routine maintenance on ambulance equipment and vehicles; completes reports promptly.
  • Maintains department living quarters and supports administrative duties as needed.

Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Provides care to sick and injured patients in pre-hospital settings. May provide care to patients having more complex medical or trauma problems in extenuating circumstances. Possesses broad-based clinical skills including communication, mentoring, advocacy, critical thinking, accountability for self, peers and staff and assisting in maintaining a healthy work environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Emergency Patient Care: Administers life support care to sick and injured persons in pre-hospital setting as authorized and directed by a physician, and within Iowa EMS Scope of Practice guidelines. Airway/ventilation/oxygenation Assisted medications – patient’s Cardiovascular/circulation Immobilization IV initiation/maintenance/fluids Medication administration – routes Miscellaneous
  2. Hospital Patient Care: Provides patient care in hospital setting as authorized and directed by a physician, and within Iowa EMS Scope of Practice guidelines. Airway/ventilation/oxygenation Assisted medications – patient’s Cardiovascular/circulation Immobilization IV initiation/maintenance/fluids Medication administration – routes Assists with 12 lead EKG recordings.   3. Respiratory Therapy Care: Provides patient care in the Respiratory Therapy department as outlined by the Respiratory Therapy department's policies and procedures. All procedures must be done on order of a physician or physician designee. Administers bronchodilator medications via handheld nebulizer. Assists respiratory therapy personnel as needed.
  4. Performs routine preventative maintenance on all ambulance equipment and vehicles, including the completion of daily vehicle checks.
  5. Maintains department living quarters, performing cleaning duties daily
  6. Completes all reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  7. Assists within the department as requested: With administrative duties. Serves on departmental committees as assigned by Manager.
  8. Promotes and maintains a positive working relationship, both intra- and inter-departmentally.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education, Experience, and Training Must be a graduate of an accredited Paramedic program and possess valid Iowa Paramedic certification; OR meet the requirements to be an RN Exempt Paramedic as specified by the State of Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services. Must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record. Previous experience as a Paramedic preferred. Must have thorough knowledge of emergency care equipment, vehicle operation and maintenance, and advanced Paramedic procedures. Ability to learn and navigate computer systems including the online training modules, the employee timesheet and the performance appraisal system. Job specific systems are also required. Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.

Physical Requirements Sitting – Approximately 25% of shift. Standing– Approximately 50% of shift. Walking – Approximately 50% of shift. Lifting – Approximately 50 pounds. Must use, and require others to use, when in hospital and/or pre-hospital settings, proper body mechanics and ergonomics and, as applicable, lifting/moving devices. Twisting – Infrequent. Bending – Moderate. Squat/Kneel – Approximately 25% of shift.
