Job summary

Tucson Medical Center is seeking an EMT-Paramedic to provide direct patient care in the Emergency Department, performing assessments, administering medications, and assisting with procedures under physician direction.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, 6 months EMT-Paramedic experience, and current BLS/ACLS/PALS certificates, with AZ EMT-Paramedic licensure. CPI training within 6 months and NRP (Rincon) within 3 months may apply.

Responsibilities

  • Take vital signs and collect specimens per established procedures.
  • Assist physicians and nursing staff with procedures using aseptic techniques and prepare rooms between procedures.

TMC HealthCare is Southern Arizona's regional nonprofit hospital system with Tucson Medical Center at its core. Each day staff comes to work to use their skills and expertise to improve the health of the entire community, from birth to the end of life.

Certified Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedics render emergency assistance such as first aid, bandaging and splinting to injured or ill patients. Applies artificial respiration or administers oxygen in cases of suffocation and asphyxiation.Administers antiseptic solution to prevent infection until patient can receive more extensive professional care as needed.Starts and administers intravenous fluids. Assists in lifting patient onto wheeled cart or stretcher and into and out of ambulance.Work is performed under the review of administrative medical direction and follows communication protocols.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintains direct and general patient care, provides on-going patient assessments and implements appropriate intervention, under Emergency Department (ED) Physician or intermediary staff orders.

Administers IV medications during a procedure, under the direction of an ED physician, and in accordance with established protocols.

Assesses patient’s status pre, during and post procedure and communicates accurately and timely any concerns or changes to ED Physician or intermediary staff.

Takes vital signs, weighs patients, collects routine urine specimens, cleans catch specimens, stool specimens, and sputum specimens in accordance with established procedures.

Administers and controls State approved medications; prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues intravenous fluids.

Applies/administers O2 flow as prescribed by ED Physician.

Assists physicians and nursing staff with procedures utilizing aseptic/sterile techniques including but not limited to IV set-up, intubation, suturing, arterial lines, and chest tubes .

Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after discharges; monitors and restocks supplies.

Collects information through history, physical examination and records ensuring information is accurately documented and reported.

Takes care of the body after death.

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintains good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control policies.

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

EXPERIENCE: S ix (6) months of paramedic-EMT experience .

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION : Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advances Life Support (PALS) certification required. C urrent Arizona Emergency Medical Technician Certification to the Paramedic level (National Registry preferred) required. Crisis Prevention Instruction (CPI) certification required within 6 months of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) certification required within three months of hire for TMC Rincon only.

  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers; and ability to read a clock and accurately document time.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
