Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Paramedic to provide skilled, family-centered EMS from admission to discharge within our Central Massachusetts system. You will assess patients, respond to emergencies, stabilize and manage acutely ill individuals in alignment with state EMS protocols.

The role requires EMT-Paramedic and CP-C certifications, ACLS, CPR, and a valid driver’s license. This is a non-exempt, on-site opportunity with a 12-hour shift mix and potential signing bonus eligibility.

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $29.35 - $39.53

Please note that the final offer may vary within this range based on a candidate's experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Schedule Details: Monday through Friday, Sunday through Saturday, Weekends (Saturday and Sunday)

Scheduled Hours: 7a-7p and 7p-7a

Shift: 4 - Mixed Shift, 12 Hours (United States of America)

I. Major Responsibilities:
  • 1. Administers skilled, family-centered medical care to individuals from admission to discharge, appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population.
  • 2. Performs patient assessment/reassessment according to standard procedure.
  • 3. Responds to a wide range of emergency situations as required.
  • 4. Assesses, stabilizes, and manages acutely ill patients in accordance with the Massachusetts EMS Pre-Hospital Treatment Protocols. Arranges emergent transport to appropriate facility if deemed necessary. Consults with on-call hospitalist as directed.
  • 5. Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level.
  • 6. Documents patient care according to standard procedure.
  • 7. Ensures quality and continuity of care through collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • 8. Administers medications, performs treatments, therapies, and operates equipment according to policy and procedure. Assists physician with treatment, procedures and special tests as required or directed.
  • 9. Assumes responsibility for professional growth.
  • 10. Identifies and participates in educational programs to strengthen both clinical and management expertise.
  • 11. Responds to requests for Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) Program. Performs assessment, consults with on-call EMS Physician to determine eligibility for self-care at home or need for transport to Emergency Department.
  • 12. Ensures MIH Vehicle is properly stocked with necessary supplies, equipment, and medications.
  • 13. Maintains open lines of communication with Program leadership, other departments, staff, physicians, resident staff, and other support personnel.

  • 3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • 4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

  • 6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • 7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • 1. Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
  • 2. Certification as a Certified Community Paramedic (CP-C) by the International Board of Specialty Certifications (IBSC).
  • 3. Certified in CPR - Basic Rescue by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • 4. Certified in ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association.
  • 5. Current, valid, unrestricted driver's license.
Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • 1. Experienced in accident scene management and control.
  • 2. Demonstrated ability to work well under often stressful situations.
  • 3. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • 4. Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred:

  • 1. Minimum three years of experience in an urban EMS service integrated with a municipal first response system.
  • 2. Previous Mobile Integrated Health Paramedic experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered medium. Position requires travel from operations center to local hospitals and patient residences with primary work being indoors in an alternative patient care environment.
